Interview with Nicholas Morzov

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Been tracking VO's with Martin Johnson for NFL Thursday night. It's really fun to see something you worked on, on TV!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Pop, indie, metalcore and reggae.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Gentry Studer for mastery!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both! Digital for details, Analog for (unique) harmonics.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Quality and Empathy

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That it's not a job.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: People usually ask me if i would use samples on drums. and my answer is almost always yes but I never completely replace them, I try to get the live kit as close as i possibly can and then tastefully blend in samples for extra harmonic richness.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That mastery is to make the mix louder XD

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: How many songs you got? Is there a specific sound you're looking to achieve? Who are your favorite artists and/or mixes? What kind of gear do you already have/ do you want to use it in this production?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Don't just go for sonic quality; go with the personality you resonate most with. The "best" producer in the world may not be the best for you.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A 1073, Vintage Neumann M49, my UAD Apollo, an i7 Macbook Pro and a pair of Event Opals

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been a musician my whole life, however, I didn't take music production seriously until about 4 years ago.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Out of the box... I everything I can to avoid "industry standard"

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I'd love to work with Periphery... they're my favorite band!!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Details add up, pay attention to them without losing sight of the bigger picture.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work on basically everything... but... the heavier, the better.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skills are a mix between Vocal production, sound design and straight up SHR-EDITING

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I try to bring my best to every song as long as I'm not stepping on any toes. At the end of the day I'm providing a service that enables people to be creative.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Good front end is where it's at, no matter what instrument I start the recording with, my goal is to make it sound as good as possible before it even hits Pro Tools.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I've got a pretty even mix of analog vs digital. No console, just a bunch of preamps and compressors in a desk with a summing mixer and a UAD Apollo 16.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm a big fan of Taylor Larson lately. Long time fan of David Bendeth and Serbin Ghenea.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: My work ranges between production and songwriting to simply editing. With my work there is no common or standard day.
