Stefan Myburgh on SoundBetter

Multiple South African Music Award winning Musician, Composer, and Producer specializing in Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar and Bass.

My philosophy is that music is for everyone. It has no rights or wrongs. Every musician should be in charge of what they want their music to sound like. I like to use my abilities to bring your ideas to life. I can handle any form of guitar or bass in any musical style, from Pop, Rock and Singer/Songwriter to Folk, Funk and Afro.
I have my own studio and some great guitar gear, microphones and software. Whether you need me to compose parts for your song or simply produce a high quality recording of an idea you have, send me your files and I can make it happen.

Stefan did an amazing job playing guitar on my track. It's like he read my mind - He composed the parts and recorded it within a day and gave me great options to choose from which was incredibly helpful. His ideas were creative, intuitive and he was an absolute pleasure to work with. I look forward to working with him on all my songs.

Interview with Stefan Myburgh

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked with a band, The Arrows. They are no longer around, but we got to tour internationally and won a bunch of awards.

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: Ashe - She is one of my favorite songwriters and I love how raw and honest her arrangements are.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I am composing for my artist brand - Largo

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Pametha - Singer/Songwriter

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Do I have to choose? We mainly create music digitally. In that we don't really have much choice anymore. So honestly I do what I can to make sure a bit of analog exists in every song I create. Analog brings character and personality

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I will do my best to see your vision fulfilled

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: I love music. It doesn't matter whats going on in life - When i work on music i temporarily forget about it!

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Q : How much does it cost to record a song? A : It depends entirely on the kind of song and what you would like it to sound like in the end

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: That its easy

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: What are your references for the project? What would you like it to sound like?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Find someone who does what you like and make sure you communicate your expectations clearly. Use references!!

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: UA Apollo, My laptop with all my software (does this count as 1??), My Duezenberg, Fancy Midi Keyboard, and a Shure Sm7b

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I first started as a session guitar player 10 years ago now and after about 3 years of doing that I started helping friends edit and put together their music. I just kind of took to that and before i knew it I was making full albums.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: I like to do pop with edge and personality

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: I bring anything from cool sounds to keyboard or guitar riffs to vocal or technical direction.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: When Im working on arranging or production I like to make sure that the song feels great first without any of the production elements in its most basic form - generally with one instrument. If a song feels good like that then I know whatever decisions I make moving forward will enhance and not distract.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: The most common work I do is composing and arranging songs according to a client's style preference

  35. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  36. A: Don't get too caught up in making something perfect that you lose all the emotion and personality in your performance

  37. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  38. A: I work on any style ranging from singer/songwriter to pop

  39. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  40. A: My strongest skill is attention to detail and an unrelenting devotion to bring the best out of every song no matter what role i am fulfilling

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: I work with simple setup, mixing in the box with UA, Sonnox and Soundtoys plugins to name a few and utilising the UA Unison Preamps as well as some API 512's. I also have a lot of synth software and production software. I can work in most DAW's. Then i have some nice microphones: Nuemann M149, Lauten Atlantis, AKG C414's , Nuemann 184, Senheisser MD421's, Shure SM7b, Royer R121 amongst others.

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: I am inspired by musicians and producers who work hard to sound original. There is a lot of music out there and a lot of people are just copying whats trending or doing well at the time. It takes a whole other level of skill to be ahead of the curve.
