Interview with Joe Knott

  1. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  2. A: Frank Ocean, mainly because he is very genuine, is fresh in his lyrical and melodic approach and overall extremely talented.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: To get out of writer's block, do something different, gather your inspiration from somewhere you wouldn't usually look, try different methods of creative flow, like free form writing etc.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: Typically I am working on my own music, of which I have a large back catalogue of waiting to be polished. My current solo style is of an R&B/Soul/Pop direction.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: Inflection of singing to convey a particular mood, there is a very high degree of importance on how to deliver a line that can change how the message is received, two identical lines sung with different inflection can often make or break the intent.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I come from the idea of having a very personal aspect to each song, I don't appreciate a value in songs with no intent behind them.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: I work starting out with a jamming process, if there is already a central theme agreed upon, or that jumped out, I will head in that direction to create a cohesive narrative based flow. Usually at first a small idea is found for either a hook or a verse etc, then expanded upon.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: A modest home recording set up, I use an AKG C414 XLII for recording rough ideas and fleshing out my own home demos.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: James Blake, Frank Ocean, John Mayer, an ever-changing list.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: Combination of top-line melody writing, lyrical, and usually featuring vocalist. I work together closely with any intent that the artist already has in mind and use an involved collaborative approach.
