Interview with Scott Nelson
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Usually it's under the 'pop' umbrella, although that is a pretty broad term! A lot of what I play is contemporary for is contemporary pop songs that have that electronic/EDM flavour to them, and I love adding guitar parts to these tracks. I also work on tracks with a more organic feel - either from a rockier background or acoustic vibes. Lastly I'm a big fan of hip hop and RnB so love adding some slinky guitar parts to those type of tracks!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to craft a part that marries and fits with the song's feeling and vibe - I'm always an advocate of playing 'for the song'. Thinking about technique, touch and sound is key to what I add to each song: if it's a choppy Nile Rodgers rhythm guitar part, I'll make sure I have a clean single coil guitar sound with a touch of compression, and focus on locking in the right hand parts to the rest of the rhythm section. Or if it's a textural, spacious thing that I'm adding to the track I'll go to my pedalboard and experiment with reverbs, delays and swells to create something that blooms and adds that quality to a track.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First of all I listen to a track without an instrument in my hands - thinking about what's already in there and what it needs, clocking the structure, shape, and feel of the song. The last one of these is very important because it's our role as session musicians to capture and augment the meaning and emotion of a song. Then I'll grab a guitar or bass and play over the track, maybe record a couple of quite 'sketches' to get ideas and guitar sounds down. Once I've got a solid part, I'll then record until I have the perfect take, and add any other guitar tracks - usually this might be stereo left and right for double tracking, or overdubbing a lead line. When it's recorded I'll take a step back and listen to the whole thing a couple of times, listening to make sure I've captured what the client/producer/artist was looking for in terms of vibe, feel and sound. Then I'll send the stems over to the client to make sure they're happy with it, and get any further direction for revisions. Usually it's right the first time, but there's no shame in telling us session musicians to try something else, after all it's in everyone's interest to make the songs 100% fulfil their potential!
