Greetings everyone. My name is Xico (pronounced heeko) and I am an eighth year bass music producer. I produce, mix, and master my own tracks. I also am a freelance saxophone player. Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Leveling tracks with the faders is quite effective. Adjusting the input gain is another way, but recently I have found that adjusting faders according to track importance makes the whole song clearer and more impactful. I find myself using less compressors and eq plugins, which means way less to no phasing and sound imbalance.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Heavy bass and drums with brain tickling elements.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Dubstep music production. The creative side. Of course, I had to learn how to mix and master on my own, which I can say I have grown much more than before.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Revolt and aggression against the trends. Some may bring subtlety, but it is the complete opposite for me.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For music production, it's quite simple. Just go with a couple of ideas, set them in a musical structure that I have made, balance and mix, and a simple master chain. Over the years, thinking too much and over processing brings down my creative and productive process and makes music less fun. Nowadays, I tend to make my music quicker with better results.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in my bedroom with just a MacBook Pro, a midi keyboard, KRK headphones, my Propellerhead Balance, my saxophone, and my saxophone mic.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: For bass music, my first inspiration was Skrillex. Afterwards, I looked towards other underground labels such as Never Say Die Records, a dubstep label. In terms of saxophone, funk saxophone like Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters and any modern rock or EDM saxophone sounds.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A new dubstep track focusing on the Riddim side with some interesting sound design.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Great tracks delivered promptly.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Currently the jobs I have been requested to do are creating saxophone parts and also doing sound design.
