Thanks for visiting! My name is Jason Fabus, and I am a professional saxophonist and woodwind recording artist. I also work as a songwriter and producer. Music is a full time job that I absolutely love.
Jason Fabus is enjoying a wonderful journey as a highly sought-after professional saxophonist throughout Southern California. This Milwaukee native is the leader of several groups, including the "Fabus Four" and is a regular performer in the budding LA Swing and Jazz scene.
Jason is also a well known songwriter, arranger, and producer under the name "J-Fab" and has collaborated with numerous artists, including: Billy Davis Jr. & Marilyn McCoo, Rahn Harper, Gregory Fletcher, D'Amato, Simon 'Ole P' Palm, Cameron Kinghorn, Bardo, and the Regiment Horns of the "Tennessee Kids." Fabus is also an esteemed music educator, serving as a coach and clinician at several schools, while also maintaining his own studio of private students in saxophone, flute, clarinet, and piano.
Although still early in his professional career, Jason has already performed with many notable musicians including Arturo Sandoval, Jane Monheit, Kim Richmond, Wayne Bergeron, Andy Martin, Van Alexander and George Benson. He recently recorded saxophone on Pan!c at the Disco's new album "Pray For the Wicked" (2018), The Simpsons (2019), Netflix's "Mystery Science Theater" (2019), NCIS: Los Angeles (2020), DreamWorks Animation's "Trolls World Tour" (2020), and the video game series "Fortnite" (2020).

Interview with Jason Fabus
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I have recently been involved in a self funded project called the Collective Project. Each track in this project involves a different "Collective" of musicians from a certain city across America. The musicians work together in a collaborative effort to create a new track, each individual doing the writing and recording work themselves. In the end, I am left as producer to mix everything, edit it down (A LOT!), and master the final result. It is a great way for me to meet and work with a great number of musicians from across our country. Please check out the soundcloud links on this page to hear some of the Collective Project.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Speed and accuracy. I feel like many producers can be working on a project and it takes over their life. This might be a good thing to get that emotionally involved, but at the end of the day, you are doing a JOB for another ARTIST. There are deadlines that need to be met and funds that need to be distributed. You don't have to always be rushing to finish something, but you need to be aware of what pace to take as a producer, because you will always have someone else waiting on you. As far as accuracy, I really enjoy nailing that right "sound" that someone is looking for, even if they can't necessarily describe it to me. Many times, I just ask an artist "where would you envision someone playing this song? Day or nighttime? On a beach? Driving down a road?" That can usually be the key to accurately creating that perfect sound.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run a very simple but effective studio. As I said earlier, a lot of my work comes with collaboration with other musicians. Most musicians nowadays have their own home studio setup to fit their needs. For example, as a saxophonist, I have a quality usb mic and room in my house that does the job for tracking solo saxophone and horn section on just about any style of music. As a producer, I'm currently operating on a 27 inch iMac (2014) as well as some older programs on Windows. I typically use FL studio, Abelton, and Logic for my projects. I have vocal mics and horn mics. I do MIDI input with an Axiom 49 controller.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: As a producer, I am deeply influenced by the jazz greats and early mo-town artists. That sound is so raw and has the SWING that has always seemed to stick around in all styles of American music. I really like the production of J-Dilla, Madlib, Dre, Just Blaze, Kanye, Flying Lotus, DJ Hi-tek, among others.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: As a freelance saxophonist and woodwind artist, I do a lot of work adding solo horn and horn section writing for various styles of music: jazz, pop, hip hop, R&B, and classical among others. As a producer, I started off and continue to make electronic beats for clients in the hip hop and pop industry. I have also had the pleasure of hiring several live musicians to track on my productions, which creates a much fuller sound and really helps to carve out my personal sound/style.
