Interview with Adam Blotner

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Creating something from nothing!

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: I don't like to write "comedy songs" - I like to write great songs that just happen to be funny!

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: My acoustic guitar, a microphone, two speakers, and an amplifier - because I wouldn't want to have to shout over the sound of the ocean.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I've been humming melodies and creating comedy since I was a kid, and formally writing songs since 2002. I created my first comedic band in 4th grade - The Singin' Salamis. My parents sent me to the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts where I focused on Musical Theater, and continued to do theater through college. When I graduated, I moved to LA to pursue my life-long dream of being on Saturday Night Live. I took classes at The Groundlings, where I wrote and performed a musical sketch about a Jonas brothers-style teen duo, which led to the idea for my musical comedy act "Pop Filter."

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: I like to give myself boundaries within which I can find some freedom. Whether a specific point of view, a theme, an idea, an emotion - I'll "sit" in it, and then sing it out however it comes out, either as a sequence of notes or a lyric or both together. Then I build the rest of the song around that little moment.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: Michael Jackson's music goes beyond genre to reach all people. Max Martin creates so much with so little. Stephen Schwartz tells his character's stories with empathy and power. Dan Bern uses humor to tell truth. Christopher Guest is brilliant.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: Funny, catchy, bold, exuberant.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Stephen Schwartz, because I would love to learn from him how to use a pop style to reach deeper into peoples' hearts.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Pop Rock/Top 40

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: My sense for comedy.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Joy, humor, silliness, passion, empathy.
