Nicholas was super efficient. Very prompt. I loved his production and sounds. He knew exactly what I wanted by my description and we only needed a couple edits to get it to where I wanted it. His mix was PHENOMENAL, so professional and clean. I absolutely loved working with him on my song.

Interview with Nicholas Antwi

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm currently working on a Pop/hip-hop record that I'm really excited about. I'm also working on an electronic pop song that has a daft punk vibe and a Pop Ep that's really cool the artist is really talented and a Trap record that Bangs!

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Kevin Dietz - Amazing Producer, Recording and Mix Engineer, a good friend and great person.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. Nothing Beats the audio quality warmth and character of analogue. Yet digital has its advantages with convenience, of storage, mobility, and recall. Having the best of both worlds is the ideal situation.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I started off as an artist and still am, I became a producer and engineer out of necessity, and fell in love with all 3 sides to music creation, as I see all 3 skills as equal parts to a whole. I after highschool i went straight to music engineering school, and after graduating worked with local artists, developing my sound as a producer artist and engineer.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Production Style - I love using synths and cool acoustic sounds to design a soundscape, with aggressive hard hitting drums and percussion. Mixing - Aggressive, Clean, Loud, Smooth with lots of character.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: When using drum samples for hip-hop production, the key to getting loud, punchy drums is to NOT compress your drum samples. most drum samples are snippets from already mastered songs, so compressing sound files that come from mastered tracks suck the life out of the drums. Use very little compression and shape your kick and snares with eq, and shape your track around the volume of your drums.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: So i work out of many studios, but the studio i work out of the most has Apollo 8 Quad Core, Tascam Desk Controller, My personal setup and gear i own are the Apollo 8, Dangerous D-Box 8ch Analog Summing Mixer, Apollo Twin Duo, UAD Plugins, Miktek C7, Nuemann TLM 103, Audio Techniqa 4040, Neve Portico 5017, FMR RNC 1773, Adam A7X Reference Monitors,

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I do a lot of producing, recording and mixing for my clients. Entire projects, EP's, & singles.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Hip Hop & RnB

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Making the vocal pop. Guiding the artist to the right performance.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Aggressive, clean, loud, smooth.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: Before i start with any mix i like to live with the rough mix first for the first 3 days before starting a mix. When recording I like sit with the rough mix of the song, then talk about the song were going to record with the artist or vocalist and really get to know what the song means to the artist and where it was born out from, this gives me a better understanding of how the song should sound, our approach in recording it and helps me help the artist more in getting the right performance. I believe in getting the 'right' performance rather than the best.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: I have a lot of influences! I would say right now my main influence is Jaycen Joshua (Mix Engineer) Young Guru (Mix Engineer) Dr. Dre (Producer/Artist/Engineer) Kanye West (Major influence).
