Carlos Proteus is the stage name of a film scoring composer, sound designer, audio producer and musician.

His quest for music has brought him to attend piano and guitar classes since very early age. Whilst pursuing studies in Orchestral Conducting in the Conservatory, Carlos has also attended classical vocal classes to feel the music better. Firm academic background in 2 different departments has helped him to better understand the harmony of sounds with the instruments and broaden his skills and competencies.Over 15 years of expertise in sound composition and design has developed a unique knack for film scoring. Collaborating with various independent filmmakers as an original music composer, Carlos has created original pieces of music for a couple of movies Caucho (2013), Khio (2013).By demand from the Ministry of Culture, Carlos has been trusted the collection, selection and the reproduction (audio restoration) of Komitas Multimedia DVD, which has been nominated/received awards in Europe. Carlos has considerable proven experience in TV production as an audio pre&post-production producer (publicity, movies, sitcoms, shows, entertainment, etc.), which has been successfully implemented in leading TV companies. Carlos Proteus is the Founder of Proteus audio post-production studio.

Interview with Carlos Proteus

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The project which makes me most proud of myself is the Multimedia DVD of Komitas, where I have done the musical selection, audio material restoration and sound design. It was a big project organized by the Ministry of Culture of Armenia and has been nominated and received prizes in many countries. Most importantly, it was a charity project, as the aim of it was merely educational and targeted at children.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am about to finish the soundtrack for a TV show.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Me:)

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Of course analog, but nowadays it is impossible to make money without digital.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I commit to the project fully and with responsibility and never lie to my clients.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: I can't help mentioning the names of Harry Gregson-Williams, Ramin Djawadi, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, etc.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Most of the time I am involved in creating audio material for publicity purposes (TV commercials,sound design, etc)

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: People sometimes don't realize the size and the time spent on doing the task.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are the deadlines for the music creation

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Put me in your place.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: ;) I don't think I could use any of them without electricity:) so I would first take some water and try to build electric station like a Tesla:)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Born into a family of Musicians. Have been creating music since I was 4. Playing piano and guitar.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Mix of orchestral, electronic, simphonic and emotional music.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Hans Zimmer. I would love to get a chance to work in the same team as Hans Zimmer for a movie like ''Inception''.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Create the aura that suits you best to be in harmony with yourself.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Soundtracks, electronic music, orchestra music, pop, hip-hop, r&b.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Imagination, creativity, hardworking nature.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: In my opinion, the most important component of the song is the message of the author. I always try to keep that message and add a bit of my own personality to it.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Every process starts with an inspiration. There us no such fixed work process in my case. I just get inspired,

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Currently I have got a mini studio at my disposal, but I am planning to move to a bigger studio with all the amenities needed, as soon as I can make it.

  41. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  42. A: ...That I love my job and do it with pleasure.
