Irving Gadoury on SoundBetter

Hi there! My name is Irving Gadoury – I’m a 2x double platinum record mixing and mastering engineer based in New York City. You can find me in the studio, on location, and everywhere in-between. My favorite type of music to work on is all types of rock music - but I have lots of experience with pop, rap, jazz, musical theater, and other genres.

Here's a rundown of some services I offer:

Mixing - I mix using a mixture of my analog outboard gear and top of the line in-the-box plugins by Acustica,
Plugin Alliance, Fab Filter, Lexicon, Empirical Labs, Pulsar Audio, SoundToys and Izotope. I offer 2 revisions per mix.

Vocal editing and tuning - I use Melodyne and Vocalign to pitch correct and edit vocal tracks in whatever way you need.

Mastering - I use a combination of out of the box and in the box processing from brands listed above, and can deliver ddp files using tools from HOFA.

Location recordings - I have a 30 input, multi-track location recording rig that I can bring anywhere. Live shows, rehearsal spaces, living rooms, film shoots, you name it. As long as there's a power outlet, I can record there. This is a great option for artists who can't afford a proper studio, but still would like to record in a non-traditional space with top-notch gear, or for artists looking to do a live video shoot in unique enviornments.

Studio recordings - My two favorite studios to work out of are Douglass Recording in Gowanus, Brooklyn, and Mighty Toad Studios in South Slope in Brooklyn.
However, I'm available to engineer at any studio of your choosing.

Live Sound - If you have a show and looking for someone to operate live sound for you, I can do that too!

Click the 'Contact' above to get in touch. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Irving recorded and mixed our live set and it sounds AMAZING! He was very professional at every stage of the process and would highly recommend him if you are looking to record your band. He was also very good at getting back promptly with edit requests and even helped us adjust the files sizes so we could upload our live performance onto Spotify. We look forward to working with him again in the future.

He was patient and fun to work with, he was very adjustable and reliable especially when it came to making sure everything was set up and sounding good for the show. He was prompt and easy to work with regarding production and recording, and we'd love to work with him again!

Irving recorded my set at Pete's Candy Store in January. He was a dream to work with - not only was he prompt and professional in communicating the plan before the recording, but he stepped in to save the day when the venue sound engineer couldn't make it, pulling double duty! The recordings are excellent, clear but still full of live music energy, and I can't wait to work with him again.

Irving recently recorded my set at Pete's Candy Store. Just thrilled with the process and the product. The mix perfectly captures the night. It's remarkably clean and crisp, but still retains the "live" quality. Irving was professional and communicative before, during, and after the recording process, and delivered an amazing product in a totally reasonable timeframe. What more could you want? Excited to work together on the next project!

Irving recorded my album release party at Pete's Candy Store and he was a dream to work with. He was quick, efficient, professional, and super friendly. The turnaround on sending me the mixed and mastered recordings was really fast and they sound great. I'd love to work with him again in the future, seems like a cool dude.

Irving recorded my first live show in New York at Pete's Candy Shop. When I arrived he introduced himself right away and made me feel at ease in an unfamiliar city and venue. He was kind, patient and helpful during set-up and sound check.
I had heard some of his live recordings from other sets at Pete's and thought they were fantastic. Needless to say, he did a wonderful job with mine too. He delivered everything in a timely manner, both stems and rough mixes. Highly recommended.

I worked with Irving to record my band's live performance in Brooklyn. He's super responsive on email, knowledgeable, and kind to boot! It's really nice to work with someone who doesn't make a fuss in a live setting but just gets there on time, sets up, and delivers really great recordings the very next day. He had advice about the venue's backline and even helped with the PA sound during our set even though it wasn't "his job."

I hope to work with him again soon on more remote live recordings.

Irving was a joy to work with. Above and beyond in terms of knowledge and ability, and a really nice, good person too. It made a huge difference in the moment to have him there; I think I was able to play with more confidence and self-assuredness. All my files were delivered lightning-fast, and then the mix he made just sounded wonderful. Thanks, highly recommended, would give more stars if possible.

Irving is a kind person. He communicates well, is patient, and delivers on the agreed upon schedule on time. I've worked with him serving as live recording engineer and as a mix engineer. In both roles I was impressed with his professionalism, attention to detail, and peaceful positive attitude. He takes direction and creative input very well while bringing tons of ideas to the table that push projects over the top. I highly recommend him.

I have worked with Irving in the studio on several projects and it's always a pleasure. Irv creates an incredibly open and dynamic studio environment enabling anyone working with him to execute their takes comfortably and efficiently (and at a modest price!). His mixing is always very concise and tailored to your specifications. I plan on scheduling many more recording dates with Irv on probably a few different projects.

Interview with Irving Gadoury

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Gabe Violet is an amazing singer!

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: - First and foremost: a good set of monitors! - Millennia STT-1 channel strip - SM57 - U87 (I've used it so much, it's what I'm used to!) - Manley Vari-Mu .........So I don't have to own these things right now right? haha

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I got my degree in Music Performance with a concentration in Sound Recording Technology, then immediately moved to NYC in 2013 to pursue a career in the music industry. I interned and was hired on staff at a, now defunct, large format recording studio near mid-town and cut my teeth learning the tools of the trade there. My career path since then has included being an assistant engineer at a few different commercial studios, then I went freelance, engineering around the city. As I'm sure anyone who's made a career in the arts work in NYC would say, it's been a wild ride.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: I start by getting a basic, serviceable mix. Then, depending on the genre, I really enjoy adding in some tasteful saturation where I can. And in some genres, "tasteful saturation" can be a whole lot, which I think is a ton of fun.

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  10. A: I love coming through in big pressure moments. One of my proudest projects is recording Emily King live - a big pressure moment with maybe close to a thousand people in attendance. And it came out amazing. Of course, everything Emily does is going to sound amazing, but I was thrilled to come through and capture the group's performance in the best way possible.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Kind of a cliche question, no? They both sound amazing, and if you have the time and resources to do certain things analog, then that's just another great tool to have. But you can't ignore the incredible convenience digital has to offer - it saves clients thousands, and even more headaches.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: Tell me everything you can about your project. I want to know as much as possible - what vibe are you going for, what tones are you really happy or unhappy with? What comparable sound are you going for? What do you want (or don't want) from the engineer.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I'm supposed to say I'm an expert at a certain genre here, but I've had quite a wild time in NYC with all sorts of genres. For nearly a year and a half, I almost exclusively worked on pop/rap vocals. I was lucky enough to work with some big names like Megan Thee Stallion, Gunna, Lil Baby, Azalea Banks, A Boogie and others. Other times I would record/mix/master solo acoustic singer-songwriters live performances twice a week for weeks on end. Some months I spent working on musical theater, tuning and lining up vocals. Sprinkle in there my love of rock and jazz projects, and I can't really pin point a specific genre. I'm regrettably confident with many different styles.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: So many different kinds of compressors have a distinct sound - keep trying different ones and adding them to your toolbox. Oh and pitch shift toms. That's fun too.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: Musical acumen. I consider myself an artist - I have a degree in music performance with a concentration in recording, so I did the ear training classes, the performances, the theory and history of music. I'll understand the language behind certain vocal harmonies, or meter or key changes.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: It's different depending on the project, but first and foremost is communication with the artist. I want to hear from them what vibe they're going for, and listen to any reference tracks - I always ask for reference tracks. Usually in this part of the discussion, I confirm what they're looking for from me: Do they want my fingerprints on there? Or do they want me to not alter the stems all that much? Important things to hash out ahead of time.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I work on Dynaudio LYD48s, and a pair of Avantone cubes. I love building my own gear so I have a lot of 500-series units that I built from kits from various companies. I'll take some stems and run them through my analog gear for some added mojo.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Steve Albini is of course very inspiring - running his own studio for a reasonable, known day rate despite his status. Other engineers would be Russ Elevado for his love for analog, and Joe Lambert is my favorite mastering engineer. I've sat with him and based my mastering approach based on his work.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Tracking and mixing are my two biggest jams. I package some of my services for some artists around the NYC area so I'll record, mix and master for a whole project. Super fun stuff.

Terms Of Service

I allow for 2 revisions depending on the project, I'll always be clear up front about the timeframe you can expect me to finish.
