blockstudio on SoundBetter

This Berlin-based audio production facility combines a flexible project studio approach with enhanced live recording possibilities.

At the block we use a few but quality microphones, preamps and converters combined with potent Digital Audio Workstations (running Steinberg Cubase and Ableton Live). We have a live room to record in about 49 sq m big (equipped with Ludwig drums, tube amps and instruments of all ages). But most important is the effort we invest in your project. Your budget is rigid but your plans are ambitious? We will find a way to get the sound you want.

Interview with blockstudio

  1. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  2. A: Finding a solution to most problems.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: I'd like to try out different positions of equipment in the room and I won't stop until it sounds right.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: Listen to the song, searching for the sound on site, recording the best performance. Editing and mixing in the box while summing analog if it suits the project.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: We use DAV and Toft preamps to capture multiple dynamic classics plus a handful condensers from Russia. We use SSL line preamps to record mostly electronic instruments and to sum digital tracks. We AD mostly with rather old RME interfaces as well as with Apogee's Rosetta. We put some analog dynamic processors to good use like the Prime 2276 or the Valley People 610 if needed. Playback is happening via Neumann KH 310 A monitors.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Bruce Swedien, Prince, DJ Muggs, RZA, George Martin, Squarepusher, Lex Vogelaar, Daniel Bergstrand, Wojciech Wiesławski, Iannis Xenakis

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: Mixing tracks recorded elsewhere, adding some newly recorded instruments or replacing some of them on site. Recording full (pop-rock) ensembles live or at least drums, bass and guitars to get a coherent performance and sound to start with. Editing sound for videos. Creating electronic sounds with synthesizers, stompboxes, drum machines.
