Mark Spurlock on SoundBetter

My name is Mark and I've been a musician since 2000 at the age of 16. I graduated from the Illinois Institute of Art - Schaumburg with a Bachelors in Audio Production.

As a musician, I write my own songs from the guitar parts, to drums, and even some synth work. As an engineer, my experience is mostly in recording and post-production.

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Interview with Mark Spurlock

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I haven't worked on many projects on my own at this moment. I did get a hand in working on a couple of album releases by bands in the Chicagoland area. I helped with drums on Austaras' album "Prisoner of Sunlight". I also helped work on the self-titled album by Heavy Element.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on a cover of Iced Earth's "Burning Times" and potentially a cover of Enter Sandman with my wife on vocals just for some extra practice.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. My ideal setup is a bunch of preamps running into an audio interface and some type of controller to work in the box. I feel like nothing can really beat the sound of a physical piece of gear to help generate your sound, but I love the flexibility and maneuverability that the digital realm provides.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Rock and heavy metal. Pretty much every genre within those two(i.e. hard rock, punk, death metal, power metal). I have some experience in other genres such as pop and country, but I'm mostly a rock and metal guy.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: I run a Focusrite Clarett 4pre into a 2015 Macbook Pro Retina running Logic Pro X. I have a Tascam monitor setup and utilize plugins from Waves, Sknote, DDMF, Toneboosters, Sonimus, and Valhalla DSP. I have a DIY Recording equipment L2A reamp box for reamping and have a pair of SM57's for recording guitars. I also have a Shure SM58 and a CAD GXL2200 for vocal mics.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: As a musician: Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth, Jon Donais of Anthrax, Jesper Stromblad & Bjorn Gelotte of In Flames, Slash, James Hetfield & Kirk Hammett of Metallica. As a producer: Fredrik Nordstrom, Andy Sneap, Bob Rock.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Right now, I focus on mixing and editing.
