Interview with David Woodman

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Digital gives you the most flexibility, allowing you to tweak things easily.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I'll do my best to make your song as good as it can be.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Being able to use my creativity in combination with that of other people - it's so inspiring to play on other people's tracks.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: What sound do you have in mind? Do you have any reference tracks that illustrate what you're after? What's your deadline?

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Be as clear as you can be about what you want. It's ok to be unsure (sometimes you only know what you want when you hear it) but being honest and communicating your requirements clearly at the start will help, especially when you're working long-distance.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: If there's no power, my custom-made acoustic, my Dusty Strings Hammer dulcimer, my banjo, my Esteves nylon string and a cajon (coz sometimes you need a beat). If there's power somehow, I'd replace the last 3 with my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp, my Fender Lonestar Strat and my Fender Telecaster with neck humbucker and Hipshot Trilogy bridge

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I've been doing this as a second career for over twenty years, but went full time in 2015.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: That sweet spot where blues, rock and country meet for a coffee.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: A few things: Pop, Blues, Country, Folk, Contemporary Christian Worship

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: I work pretty quickly.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Feel, mostly - I want to serve the song, rather than overwhelming it.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: For sessions for clients, I like to be clear what they have in their heads already (if anything) in terms of sounds, styles before I make a start. I try to provide what they've imagined, but I'll also throw in some other ideas, to give options, if they're open to that.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I run Logic Pro X on my Macbook Pro.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Musically, players who convey emotion, such as Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and Richard Thompson.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I'm regularly brought in to provide electric and acoustic guitar tracks, but often provide backing vocals too. However I'm getting more requests for hammer dulcimer parts now, as people become more aware of how amazing that instrument sounds.
