Interview with Sonicwerkz Production

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I had the opportunity to work on Remnants' debut EP recently as the co-producer and engineer. The band had the drive to want to improve themselves and I could hear it in the progression of their music. This made me stoked when I was working with them and I think the end-product exceeded quite a lot of people's expectations.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Working on full production for a couple of local bands here in Singapore!

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Hybrid! It's the best of both worlds. I prefer using analog gear on the mix bus and plugins on individual tracks and busses.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I'll work till we get it right.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The fact that I get to listen to and work with lots of talented bands on a daily basis.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: The number 1 question would be: "What are your rates?" and my answer would be: "What can I do to help you improve your music?"

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: The biggest misconception would be that mixing engineers can fix everything that went wrong during the recording. I'm sure some of you would have heard of the phrase "we'll fix it in post". While it's true to a certain extent, I don't believe this is a good mindset to have.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What are you trying to achieve out of this upcoming release?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Find someone that genuinely cares about your music. There are many people out there that's just trying to make a quick buck out of this so it's really important to find the right guy for the job.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: My computer, interface, Amphion speakers, SSL bus compressor and Kemper.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I graduated with a Diploma in Music and Audio Technology in 2014 and I've been doing all sorts of work related to audio engineering since I was a 2nd year student in that diploma course.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Aggressive yet musical

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would love to work with Crystal Lake (JP). I've been a fan since the start and they just keep getting better and better every time.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: The source is EVERYTHING. Get your performance right, get your instruments setup properly and track it well.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Metal, hardcore, rock

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Making things sound huge and explosive.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Apart from making it sound awesome, I try to evoke emotions of the song through my mixing.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: For mixing work, I'll typically request for either a roughly mixed version of the song or some sort of reference before I start mixing. I'll then try to further improve the song and add in a little bit of flair before sending the mix over for the first review.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: The main setup I work in is a very humble home studio setup but it has everything I need to get things done well. The most important piece of gear would be the Amphion One18 speakers. They reveal EVERYTHING so I can hone in on really minute details.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Producers like Will Putney, Forrester Savell and Sam Pura as well as mastering engineers like Ted Jensen and Mike Kalajian.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I mainly work as a producer, recording, mixing and mastering engineer for local bands here in Singapore. I do a lot of mastering work for commercial studios as well.
