Remote Mixing and Mastering

Tyler McGuire on SoundBetter

Hey Guys! Thanks for checking out my page! I am 22 years old so I'm still learning the business. Pro drummer with 18 years experience. I've been around music my whole life and I've come to find I've got an ear for mixing and mastering. I may be young and lack tons of experience but you'll find that my work will give you the most bang for your buck!

Interview with Tyler McGuire

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I recently finished up an album for a guy named Jim Platt. It turned out to be the best project I've worked on to this day. I tracked, mixed, mastered, played drums and did some backing vocals.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I actually just finished up all of the projects I had been working on and I'm really bored and don't know what to do with myself....

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Well. I love vintage gear as much as the next guy. But digital. I just don't have the money for analog. Plus its a changing industry and we've gotta stay up to date!

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: You will be happy with my work when you get your songs back. I've never disappointed a client before and I never plan to.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Being creative. And the fact that it doesn't feel like work to me.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That because I am fairly young I must not know what I'm doing.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: What band/ artist do you want your project to sound like?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Let me mix and master your songs!

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: It would be pointless to have and audio equipment on a desert island! So drums, acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, maybe a piano lol and more drums!

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I graduated The Recording Connection's Bachelor's and Master's programs. I graduated in 2014. I had been recording my band and friends bands for fun since about 2010-2011

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: I aim for natural sounding. I want the music you're hearing to sound like the band is playing in front of you.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I've always loved the Foo Fighters and it would be a dream of mine to work on their music.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: I've worked on acoustic folk, rap, metal, blues, classic rock, etc. You name it I'll make it sound good.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Mixing drums. Being a drummer, this is what i find to be most enjoyable for me to do.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: My ears. Growing up in a musical family has really helped me to develop my ears. A good set of ears on an engineer can take a good mix over the top!

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: I'm very bad at leaving a project once I start. I become quite obsessed with new projects to be honest.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: Mixing in my bedroom at the moment. Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and Octopre dynamic > 27" iMac > Pro Tools 12 > Yamaha hs50m Monitors and KRK 10s sub. Vintage drums and quality cymbals, pro mics.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Recently I have been reading a lot of stuff from Brian Hood from 456 Recordings in Nashville. His eBook is what led me to this site.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: Typically I track, mix and master for my clients, but I recently moved to phoenix and now I don't have a studio to work in. So mostly just mixing and mastering for now.
