Jas' is brilliant at his job. Just look at the list of great albums that he's mastered. A lovely guy too, a real pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended.

Interview with Jason Mitchell Mastering

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Matt Deighton - Doubtless Dauntless: Mastering Gary numan - Dance: Mastering A couple of albums from last year that I really enjoyed the process.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: 3 albums, 2 singles, and 2 EP's...

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both have their merits and they pitfalls, don't get hung up about it. Whatever is required to get the right result should be all that counts.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: To do my best to make you happy with your music.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Different music.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Q.How fast can you do it? A.I'll find time. Q.Can it be louder? A.Let's discuss...

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: Loud. It's irrelevant. In 10 years time who issuing to want to hear distorted music for the sake of a few DB's?

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Do you have references of material so I can get into your headspace and understand where you like your music.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: This process is creative, find someone that fits your style or is enthused by your project and willing to work at it.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: A guitar, so I could learn it. A mic so I could amp it. Some massive speakers so I could hear it. A DAW so I could record it. A boat so I could leave it...

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Studio technician at my college 30 odd years ago, then a studio engineer in a pro studio. Mastering engineer for over 20 years in a pro studio!

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Musical.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: David Bowie: visionary, pioneer, genius.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Work at the highest resolution possible. Even if it's 48k rather than 44.1k, the final result will benefit from it.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Usually guitar based but just as comfortable with electronic.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Finding the solution required.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: A different perspective.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Listen to the music, try and get the vibe that the client is after. Then try a few approaches to tailor the sound I'm looking for. Once I'm happy I normally send for approval, if I have questions or suggestions I'll contact the client maybe with a demo and an idea.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have two setups, my main studio with ATC monitoring and my smaller studio with Neumann monitoring. Both are mastering grade and both use the same DAW's and plugins. I don't pick to do jobs in either, I'm comfortable and confident in both studios.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I'm inspired by all musicians and the different processes that they use. Music production professionals inspire me when they can get a great sound (live or recorded) that moves me.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Mastering. I can engineer and produce as well but mastering is my professional career and my forte. It's wha clients usually hire me to do.
