Interview with Brendan Shulman

  1. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  2. A: My strongest skill is that I am very dynamic when it comes to mixing a song. Each song is a different vibe and requires different mixing techniques, different gear/plugins to fully bring out its potential. Instead of just going through the motions, I find that sound and branch off of it, making each one special.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: A song to me is all about the production and mixing. Especially these days with heavy side chain compression on almost every song on the radio, a good mix is what separates a song from a great song. I incorporate all the little tricks and tools for better mixes, greatly improving the sound of any song.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: I am a big fan of Manny Marroquin and Serban Ghenea. They both have unique techniques for mixing which inspires me to include some into my mixes.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: I get a lot of pop/rock artists asking for mixing/mastering and vocal tuning. I have mixed everything from rap to singer/songwriter to EDM.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will not stop working on your song until you are 100% happy with it.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: I get asked a lot about my rates for mixing. What some people do not know is just how much work goes into mixing a song. Bottom line is I'd love to work on your songs for you so feel free to contact me and we can work something out.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: Please have good clean recordings, that all. There is not much I can do for you when you send me fuzzy tracks that were recorded with an iPhone...and yes that has happened to me before.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Find someone who can provide exactly what you need, do not settle for something because its free and easy. Its your music and your career so go all out with it.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Make the vocals loud people! Whats a song without the vocals? It happens all the time where you turn on the radio and can hardly understand what the singer is saying. That turns people away instantly, keep them out front while still being dynamic.
