Interview with Studio Suiseidl

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Analog. I always compare digital to analog like computer game graphics to reality. Real gear, real sound. No simulation.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: Get what you pay for.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: It's just the best job in the world :-)

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: Pricing information, what gear / instruments to bring. :-)

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: Communication in general is important. I always want to know their expectations, so we can work well together. The result is that what counts in the end, and a result, that will please both parties is achieved through communication.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: Started out with mobile on location recording around 2002. Built my studio in 2011.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: Fat but transparent. Modern but vintage. Hard to fit into words. Listen to the songs instead :-)

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Generally talented bands/musicians. Thats just much more fun than only "for the money".

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Try to go for the best sound during recording. Fix it in the mix is a myth.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Problem solving, haha. Thats basically what audio engineering is about :-)

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Mostly rock music. That's what I am known for.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: If requested, I can re-arrange a good song idea and make the song "work". I see a lot of bands with good ideas, but with bad arrangements. Mostly too much stuff crammed into a song, which makes it hard to digest for the listener.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: First, I listen to the pre-production. Then the arrangement and changes are worked out with the band prior to recording. After that, the recording starts. First drums, then guitars, followed by bass and vocals. I have a flexible setup, so vocal recording can be started right after the first guitars are recorded. When the singer gets tired, guitar recording continues. This way, the singer has enough recreational time so he can always deliver top performance on every song. After recording comes the cleanup edit, then the mixing process.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: The philosophy of my studio and my workflow is the combination of classic big sounding analog gear combined with modern conveniences and possibilities Pro Tools HD has to offer.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: In 2013, I attended a Mix With The Masters seminar held in Studio la Fabrique in Saint-Remy de Provence, France, conducted by Chris Lord-Alge. This experience heavily inspired my workflow and my choice of gear up until today.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: My most common type of work includes recording, mixing and mastering of rock based music. Additional services include cleanup edit, vocal tuning and drum quantization during the recording process.
