Interview with Mavriik

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on a project titled "No Air" the studio was in a penthouse in a high rise downtown and for 6 days I worked with a very talented songwriter and producer to create 8 songs for Justin Bieber and the pay was great!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently I am continuing to create and add to my catalog and looking for placement opportunities.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I am new to this site but hope to meet some very talented individuals.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I don't know why we have to choice, I like creating certain aspects of music digitally but I love the sound and process of analog there is no reason why both can be used to achieve a great sound.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to be professional and on time to any and all sessions, and last but definitely not least I promise to bring my "A" game every single time and make the best music I possibly can.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I like creating and collaborating ideas with other singing and manipulating my voice with plugins and other effects to make a new sound.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Why don't you pursue a career as a performing artist? I tell them I do like performing but that isn't where my passion lies my passion is being in a studio with all the equipment and using technology to create innovative music Why are you not you signed to a record label? I went to school for audio engineering and not until recently have I started singing and writing, in all honesty I never had a plan or a goal to get signed but now I am taking it much more seriously and creating this profile and networking will hopefully lead to some sort of deal.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What is the end goal of any material we work on together? What is your title/position in the industry? Do you already have relationships and just want more music in your catalog? Do you need me to demo records or write and demo them as well? Do you have access to a professional recording studio?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Have a defined vision and sound you are trying to achieve I take direction very well and it helps when I can add to something you already have an idea about.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: MPC 4000 TC-Helicon voicelive touch 2 SM-57/58 Roland Fantom - S Power Generator with 5 years worth of fuel

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started out producing music and then graduated from the conservatory of recording arts and science. After graduating I packed up and moved to Los Angeles to work at Blakslee recording company in North Hollywood there I had the honor of assisting in the production of "The Way I see it" by Raphael Saadiq and I was also credited on the album 'Colour me Free" by Joss Stone. I went on to start my own recoding studio where I was head engineer and producer and did freelance production work and studio management. I performed my original music opening up for acts like Kid Ink, Kirko Bangs, and Bobby V. I now have a new focus on getting songs placed with major artist and making my skills and brand more recognizable.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: EDM vibes with stripped-down R&B ballads atmospheric instruments as well as hi-hats, bass and synths a mix of R&B, EDM and pop and downbeat acoustic-R&B

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would like to work with Justin Bieber because we have a similar smooth tone and cadence and our message is uplifting and positive. Also his production teams style is very similar to mine I can tell we pull inspiration from the same places.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: One music tip I would share would be to be very mindful of your cadence and rhythm of your vocal performance, you want to be a little behind the beat 10ms to be specific this make it so your voice and the music are still in sync but it allows the vocals to have a space of there own which sounds more rhythmic and relaxed.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually work on R&B, trapsoul, pop, EDM

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is my voice and proficiency at recording vocals.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring a vibe and a feeling to a song my vocals are seductive and unique so the listener is drawn in and able to understand the message and lyrics in the song. I like to create music that is different enough to stand out but familiar enough to be placed on any top 40 radio station. I like rhythmic vocals that will sound good even as an acapella so other producers can remix.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: If I am starting from scratch I usually start with a melody or a cord progression in Logic and make a 8 - 16 measure loop. Once I have a loop together that I like I will start adding percussion and either a bass line or 808 depending on the style I am trying to achieve. I like to write with the music being basic so I would now record a vocal reference track and so I can find melodies for the hook and verses. I write the verse and hook in no particular order but lately I have been starting with the verse and writing it strait into the hook so everything flows naturally. Once I have a good reference track I start writing line by line and sometime ill loop each measure of the verse and hook and sing until i have the best take. I comp my performances. I take my time working through the song adding backgrounds and additional musical parts to the song, I treat it like a puzzle and piece it together.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I currently have a Mojave MA-300 microphone, Focusrite ISA one mic pre, TC-Helicon Voicelive touch 2, iMac, Logic Pro X and Protools 12, Focusrite Scarlett 18i20.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I am heavily inspired by producers like Timbaland, Raphael Saadiq, Mannie Fresh, Artist such as Stevie Wonder, Bryson Tiller, Justin Bieber, Drake, and The weeknd,

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I create and demo catchy vocal melodies and harmonies, write lyrics based around concepts or from scratch, vocal production including vocal mixing, produce music using logic pro, collaborate and add keyboard synth to beats and production.
