Sarah Stallman on SoundBetter

A professional singer who loves everything from jazz to country, but with a soft spot for corny pop power ballads.

After a hiatus from SoundBetter, I'm happy to say I'm back!

About me:
I'm a working singer-for-hire based out of Los Angeles, CA. I work in many genres including country, pop, rock, jazz, disco and Motown. I also do singer soundalikes. I've studied session singing with Tim Davis (Glee, Barbra Streisand) and Windy Wagner (Britney Spears, Disney) in spaces including the Eastwood Soundstage at Warner Bros and the Streisand Soundstage at Sony. Much of my experience is as a live stage lead vocalist and singer/dancer for international companies such as Holland America, Universal Studios Singapore, and Carnival Cruises. In LA I have performed at legendary venues like The Viper Room and am a resident backup vocalist at The Whisky A Go-Go.

I have degree in Vocal Music, along with years of experience as a classical pianist. I have sung in many classical ensembles, including a capella and chamber music. Although I don't perform classically much these days, I still value it as a great foundation.

I would love to lend my vocals to your project as either backup or featured vocalist. I tend to have a cleaner and more polished sound and use that to work my voice into different styles. If you are interested in my services, please contact me in regards to what you're looking for specifically and I'll be happy to work something out for your project!

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Sarah did a fantastic job on the song we did together...her voice was perfect for it and she was quick. Communication was top shelf too!

Interview with Sarah Stallman

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I will work on your project until it is what you envisioned. I want to bring whatever is in your head to life. This is why I always do my best to communicate from the beginning, so we can get the sound you want in an efficient and productive way.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I like that I get to showcase my strengths, yet am always learning with every single project I do. I'm all about connection with music and the people, and that's what keeps me going.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: If you're song was a "color," what would it be? Do you have any adjectives or back story about this song to help inform the type of vocal you want?

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I started my professional career as a lead vocalist with cruise lines and international theme parks. Since then I continued working with cruise lines for a bit and began stepping in with bands; it was the latter that started to feed my passion for band/group vocals. Although I do enjoy theatrical productions, my career now is in lead/background vocals for bands and studio work.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Simple, with the ability to grow into something powerful.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Lady Gaga. Her penchant for both theatrical and emotional songs has always been captivating to me.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: As a resident BGV artist at the Whisky, I sing a LOT of rock. I also grew up a country girl, so my country roots are still engrained in me. I have a huge soft spot for jazz, as I find it to be one of the few genres that really integrates a strong blend of musicality, control, and emotion.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Being able to keep things simple, while giving room for big choices if and when it suits the track.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I enjoy using technical skill to enhance the emotional effect of the song. I utilize whatever styles and subtleties are suited to the song, whether it's a power belt or a soft straight tone.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: I'm able to learn either by ear or using sheet music. I collaborate with the artist/team to find out what their vision and sound is for the track, and use that to guide my own vocals while still providing my own style.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I record on my MacBook Pro with Garageband. I use a Shure Beta 58A microphone and run it through a Scarlett i2i pre-amp processor.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I'm always inspired by studio singers. Their attention to nuance, specifics, and pitch all at the same time are an art form in and of itself.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I typically find myself primarily lending vocals to rock or jazz projects (so similar, I know). I do a lot of work as a backup vocalist, either learning parts off of an existing record or arranging my own. As a trained studio singer, I also lend color and depth to vocal tracks.

  27. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  28. A: That everyone thinks I'm out to get a record deal just because I'm a singer! Although I enjoy singing lead, I didn't come to L.A. to 'land a deal'; I came to WORK. I'm more interested in all the other types of work - studio, commercial, concert, etc. - outside of the typical recording artist area.
