Interview with Splatface Audio Mixing

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: At the moment I'm in the planning stages of a project to record, mix, master, and release a live album for a local band. I'm super excited for the challenge!

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: None of my clients will ever feel like they didn't get what they paid for. You will get constant mix samples, and have input into the final sound. I will not be satisfied until you are.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: Some clients hire me as a mix engineer then expect me to produce their song start to finish. I will gladly function as a producer, but only if that was made clear from the beginning. I have an extremely busy schedule and won't have time for your project if two weeks turns into two months.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Get it right in the recording phase. If the vocal tracks have noise from the street outside, the guitar is out of tune, and the drums were recorded with one USB microphone, there's no way to "fix it in the mix."

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: My passion is metal, but my inspiration is jazz. That being said, I write acoustic singer-songwriter music. Basically, I work on anything and everything.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Definitely live drums. They were the first instrument I ever recorded/mixed, and since then I have done countless covers, singles, demos, and albums where I was brought in solely to record and mix the drums.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: For recording (mainly live drums) I have an industry standard setup, including Shure, Samson, Sterling Audio, and MXL Microphones. I record and mix in Reaper, with Audio-Technica headphones and professional grade studio monitors.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: My role in the production process is usually either producer or mix/recording engineer, depending on the client and situation. In the recording stages of a project I'm always in the studio tweaking mic placement or suggesting performance changes. Once I get the perfect take, I get to my computer and start mixing. Once the song is mixed, I'll send it off to the mastering engineer and then to the client!

My philosophy is that to get a great final product, you need to put in a lot of time an effort. Turnaround times vary with tracks. I will gladly do revisions, but not excessively.
