Using your guidance, our aim is to mould your recordings into music with impact, sonic clarity and excitement.
Music Mixing Online's main mixing and mastering engineer is Dan Atkinson. Dan studied audio production at Confetti Studios in Nottingham as well as Leeds Metropolitan University and left with a BSc in Creative Music and Sound Technology.
Since leaving university Dan has worked with many artists which led to him founding a independant record label in 2011, Mountains of Records. While running Mountains of Records Dan worked with Black Peaks (formerly Shrine), Alright the Captain, Bear Makes Ninja, Trails, Some Skeletons, Blind Wives, Merricks Tusk and Former Monarchs.
As part of Dan's mixing and mastering service he is also happy to provide free strategic advice for marketing a new release, approaching record labels and booking agents.

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recorded and produced Bear Makes Ninja's 2nd EP Shooting at Bridges which was release through the label I run called Mountains of Records. The release of this EP really propelled their career. Listen here: https://bearmakesninja.bandcamp.com/album/shouting-at-bridges

A: Building Music Mixing Online's client base.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I am new to SoundBetter.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I'm not going to lie, I do enjoy working with analogue gear but the precision, flexibilty and quality of working in the box means I favour digital.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To deliver a finished project on time and beyond expectations.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The wide range of music and musicians we get to work with.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How do I send you my music? If you have Logic Pro X just zip the folder and send it through our dropbox (email for details). If you don't have Logic, export all the individual tracks without effects (remove from effects from master bus too) at your sequencers sample rate/bit rate (44.1k, 48k etc) and make sure that they are all exported from the same start point i.e 0:00:00. You can then zip these files and send them through our dropbox.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The process is quick. It is not.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always ask for reference material and what direction they want me to take the project. I also ask if they want any tracks linking with audio and most importantly if they have a deadline.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure you speak to the individual to work out whether they are the right people to work with.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Adam A7X speakers, Apple Mac Laptop, Univeral Audio Apollo Twin, Headphones and a generator.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been producing and recording bands for 8 years. Additionally I have spent 4 years working as a sound designer for a TV Studio and I have run my own independent record label for 5 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clear, defined and prominant but tailored to you.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love the opportunity to work with Biffy Clyro. I am a massive fan of their first 3 albums and would jump at the chance to revisit their more progressive song writing style.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I am a big fan or parallel compression, if the track suites this kind of technique. Its a great way to add energy and enhance the dynamics of a song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Alternative Rock, Singer songwriters & Heavy Rock - Anything guitar based.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am a classically trained musician as well an experienced audio engineer.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I will ensure that your music is treat as it was intended. Whether you want your song to sound energetic, sombre, raw or polished each project will be treated uniquely and with the utmost care.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: +*The approach is different for each project but generally I like to balance everything without any processing and before working through the drums, bass, guitars, keyboards and vocals. This method allows me to clearly maintain the overall balance of the song whilst mixing.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: All our work is done in the box using a range of Universal Audio and Slate Digital plugins. We work within the box because it keeps the processing pure by limiting the amount of analogue to digital conversions. Monitoring using Universal Audio's Apollo Twin with a pair of Adam A7X monitors.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The work of Butch Vig, Nigel Godrich & Chris Sheldon have inspired me the most but I could mentioned loads of others.

A: Mixing and mastering singles, EPs and albums for unsigned artists.
