Interview with Nathan Ray/SCRecording

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both! Some things sound great digital and some sound better analog. I love an analog sound with the efficiency of a digital workflow.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: To bring your song to life.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Anything Musical

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I started as a musician and traveled quite a bit. I had always produced a good bit of my music when I was younger and once the traveling slowed down I knew being a full time audio engineer was second nature for me.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Powerful and consistent

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: The instrumentation should be introduced in such a way that each instrument is using its own space in the production and mix.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I usually work on Rap, Hip Hop, Pop, R&B, Rock, and Singer Songwriter,

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Carefully listening

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: The emotion, feeling! the song should convey the feeling of the artist who recorded it.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: I typically throw all faders at zero and take a quick listen to the song. I get a quick balance of the tracks. This allows me feel what direction the mix should go. I then usually start with the drums, bass, guitars, and then move on to the vocals. After starting the vocals, I'll start to work in some of the other instrumentation.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: Lynx Aurora A/D Conversion, Pro Tools HDX, Dangerous Music Analog Summing, SSL EQ's, SSL Bus Compressor, Universal Audio Analog gear and plugins. Dangerous music monitoring, Bax Mastering Eq, Dangerous Music Mastering Compressor. Plugins from Waves, Slate Digital, UA, and more.
