Jake is a phenomenal musician and producer. Just to be with him in the studio and to watch him go to work on your song is quite a thrill. He took my songs and transformed them into special tracks that I will treasure for a lifetime. He works with you at your level of experience, too. He is very easy to work with. Can't wait to work with him again.

Interview with Jake Knox

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: Gear rules the world, or musical ability rules the world. Its a combination of the perfection of both mixed with serving the songs production needs!

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: Intent. I have a Greg Wells pop vibe mixed with a EDM producer mindset with the dexterity of a Jazz musician.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: You! Honestly I just look for good people and good music!

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Less is more.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: My musical ability mixed with my engineering skills.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: As a producer currently working with Grammy and Multi Platinum clients, I pride myself on my instincts to work with your song! I also know the importance of completing your vision, so lets communicate!

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: First thing in the morning with fresh ears, I grab a cup of coffee and see what you need!

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: Over the past 11 years of working in the industry I pride myself on my gear collection. I have collected the studio classics. Seriously the list is amazing check it out! I have a studio located in Los Angeles.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: Greg Wells

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I work as a Producer/ MD for high tier clients. In that work I primarily find myself recording as a session musician on these projects.

  21. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  22. A: If you need a trombone or trumpet, Quinn Carson.

  23. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  24. A: Can you do my project. If the song vibes with me, and I feel I can do my best work on it I will work on your project. If it doesn't vibe, or if I feel I am not the best fit then I will politely decline. This isn't a money thing for me, its about building community.

  25. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  26. A: Shop around. I have been in the same situation. Ease your mind and contact the people you want to hire. Ask as many questions as you can, and then start to develop a relationship with whom you want to work to. There is nothing worse than not having a spark with those around you. Even if you have the best in the biz, they might not be able to make the right product with you. If it feels right, it usually is.

  27. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  28. A: Neve, Speakers, Keyboard, Guitar, U67.

  29. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  30. A: I got started music directing for artists, then producing them, then mixing them, then writing with them, then doing all of it together. Now I try and take the experiences I have learned the hard way, and help get your vision completed!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, Alt Hip Hop, EDM, rock.

  33. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  34. A: Too much.

  35. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  36. A: Both. Always both. They both do things the other can't.

  37. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  38. A: Working with others.

  39. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  40. A: I am proud of each project I work on. My goal in working is to better myself with each job. There is no project that I am not proud of!

  41. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  42. A: Honesty, Good Communication, Hard Work.

  43. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  44. A: Their goals for the project, and who they would hire if they didn't have any budget restraints. This helps me get an idea of the clients true vision. If I feel that I can help you get there I will tell you. I will also tell you if it would be better to look for someone else! In the end every music job is a collaboration.Lets create.
