Interview with Matt Heap - Suff Studio

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I'll keep going till you're happy.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Getting 'in the zone' - totally lost in the music. Getting totally on a level with the artist and understanding and realising their vision.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Have a proper conversation with them rather than just a quick price enquiry. Get a feel for whether the producer is genuinely interested in your music or whether they're just there to push buttons and take your money. They should show as much passion for their work as you show in yours.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I opened my first studio 10 years ago, a box room under a hairdressers, just I could take the 'learn as you do' approach. I worked up from there and have since settled in a built for purpose recording studio. The more I made records the better I got but I also studied other peoples work and methods to constantly improve.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Punchy drums, layered guitars, vocal harmonies, VIBE

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Prepare to explore.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Indie and rock but have worked in many genres and am an avid listener of music right accross the board. This allows me to work accross multiple genre's with an open mind and a focussed perspective.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: It totally varies from project to project but I do whatever will provide the artist with the best outcome, and whatever suits their sound.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: Spacious live room and control room, nice collections of instrumants, amps, pedal, microphones, etc.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Producers - Joe Chiccarelli, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Eric Valentine, Flood Mixers - Spike Stent, Chris Lorde Alge, Tchad Blake Artists - Radiohead, Deftones, Sigur Ros, My Bloody Valentine, The Beatles, The 1975, Oasis, The Cure

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: Digital - because it's quick and easy to recall, so in turn costs less.

  23. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  24. A: How much involvement do you want from me - right from the writing process, just mixing etc? What are you influences, what records do you like the sound of?

  25. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  26. A: Fender strat, Midi keyboard, Computer loaded with lots of software instruments and plugins, a Shure SM7B and an interface.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: The Cure. Because they're absolute legends with the most beautiful sounding records.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: My attention to detail.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I excel at ironing out any creases in the song to make it tighter and more professional sounding. Artists usually appreciate my ideas for extra layers to turn their basic songs into fuller productions.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: Recording and mixing indie rock bands, building tracks from the ground up.
