Interview with Fernando Santos - Pandarus

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: Do not look in detail to understand what your artist needs.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: We ask details about the musical style, on the proposal of the album, on history of the artist, all the details that make us better understand the project. We have established a constant communication with the artist and we constantly talking and answering questions during the process of mixing and mastering, after this step the artist can still perform 2 reviews.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I have recording independent artists over 17 years. I had the opportunity to work with many professionals including the "Cordel do Fogo Encantado" Akundum and several other local artists. I also composed, arranged and recorded soundtracks for movies like "Pinga Fogo e a Idade" and "Joãozinho de Carne e Osso" of Director Paulo Vespúcio and participation of Leticia Spiller.   7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: I am new on Soundbetter and still do not know well the professionals registered.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: We act with honesty, always trying to do the best. The look feel affinity to our projects. We will do with the heart.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: Notebook and Pro Tools and nothing more.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: My style is the style of music I need to mix. Always study the whole process of the artist with the objective of to translate the truth of his music. I do not believe that having a single style is interesting, as it would be limiting my ability to learn. My mixes do not sound the same. I'm always looking for a different sound to each project, always the next possible of what the artist thinks. I believe this may be my main style of mixing.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Gilberto Gil, He is simply one of the greatest composers of Brazilian music. It would be a dream.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: All good music. Latin, Rock, Hip-hop, Brazilian Music, Regional Music...

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Mixing and Mastering, With attention to the quality of our treatment of vocal.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Today any professional can easily get a good audio quality. We offer personality, with the objective of helping artists to position themselves in the music industry. Our mixes style choices are based on the music industry studies, this enables us to have a much more accurate focus, and significantly increases the possibility of success of the artist.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: My process always depends on the style of music, the style of the artist, the project objective. Can be fully in the box or Hybrid (in the box and outside the box). For me the most important is the musical quality, I believe that the mix is always at the service of art.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I usually work with the production from the beginning, I am a musician with over 20 years of experience, I have degree in classical guitar, with advanced knowledge in arrangement and orchestration. Working with independent artists to at least 17 years in my studio. I have long experience with recording, mixing and mastering.

  27. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  28. A: With brazilian indie bands.

  29. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  30. A: Both, use the best of two worlds.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Parallel Compression!

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: We have available to our customers: Protools 10 and 11; Fatso, Distressor, Clariphonic, SSl Bus compressor, Foscusrite Isa, Foscusrite Octopre, Focusritte Saffire Pro, for recording and mixing. UAD2 plugins and TC Finalizer for mix and mastering. Celemony Melodyne for voice tune Gretsch Catalina Maple and Mapex for drum tracks

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Elza Soares, Siba, Kiko Dinnucci, Metá Metá, Ziggy Marley, and many others...
