Interview with ADAMHEARS

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I am currently working on a Sound Installation to be presented at the 2018 Whalefest in Brighton. It features a synthesised whale song in surround sound, performed by an algorithm modelled on real data collected from humpback whales.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: There are sometimes moments in sessions, when you witness great ideas finally come together, lock in and sync.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I have been working professionally as a Sound Engineer, both in the studio and at live events for a few years now. First I did a BMus, then an MA and volunteered in a studio. Then worked as an AV technician in the Events Industry. I am currently working freelance as a Sound Engineer, both in the studio and for Live Events between Brighton and London, UK.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Young Guru.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: A balance of Technical skill and Artistic sensitivity.

  11. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  12. A: I recorded and mixed the demo for one of the 2016 Eurovision entries for Ireland. It was a powerful song written for Piano and Vocals, and I consider it one of my best Recordings. I used an M/S mic placement on the vocal and three mics to get a stereo mix of the inner piano.

  14. A: Jerrome Buck-Townsend, D2i Studios Founder

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: Depends on the genre and intended effect, for instance a genre like Trip-Hop requires digital effects, whereas analog can compliment genres such as Funk and Soul very well.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Avoid using visual displays in software to aid you in mixing. Close your eyes and train yourself to listen properly.
