Interview with Twisted Pulse

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: The biggest misconception is that results are all about the gear that is used. In reality the skillset and experience of the musician and mixing engineer trump expensive gear hands down every time.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Look for the right fit in terms of personality and musical goals.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: Let me see... My trusty laptop, midi keyboard, electric guitar, a good condenser microphone and a Focusrite audio interface. With these I could make anything! (but there would be nobody to hear it so maybe I should bring food and water instead?)

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: I like using layers of sound textures so that the final mix is full.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I'd like to work with Adele. The depth of her lyrics and soulfulness of her vocals are very impressive and she hasn't "sold out" to mainstream pop music, making her music more original and relatable.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: GIRATS (Get it right at the source). Great music almost mixes itself when it has been written and recorded well but on the other hand, trying to milk a great song out of sub-par tracks is like squeezing water out of a stone i.e. frustrating and unrewarding.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I tend to re-imagine songs with new melodic hooks and counter-melodies but I know when a song doesn't need anything extra.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I'm an avid Beatles fan and admire their ability to evolve their music over time. I'm also inspired by Bob Marley with his revolutionary lyrics and message of love that endures to this day.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: My most common jobs involve creating full instrumental backing tracks from rough recordings sent by clients then mixing the final song when the vocals have been recorded.
