Interview with Brandon Moore

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both! Digital for the convenience and unlimited possibilities; analog for the amazing sound quality (and it's super fun).

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I get to work with music ALL day!

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: I do not work magic to fix people's badly recorded material. We've all heard the saying, "you can't polish a turd." Well, that's just as true in the music business!

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I am a recording arts graduate and have been at this for a little over 6 years now!

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: It is a myth that you can just "fix it in the mix." Focus on getting as good of a sound you can get when recording by using great mic placement and playing the best you can.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I work at Starstruck Studios on Music Row in Nashville, TN. They're equipment is completely top of the line stuff. We have two 72 channel SSL 9000J consoles, tons of vintage outboard gear, and a plethora of amazing microphones. I also have several industry standard plug-ins on my hard drive that I love to incorporate in my mix.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: A lot of the time I'm dealing with lower budgeting clients that are looking to get a quality mix out of what they already have recorded. I'll do drum replacement, guitar re-amping, vocal tuning, and advanced audio quantization to clean up what I can and make the band as tight as they can be. Then polish it all up with an appropriate mix for the vibe of the song.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I love mixing anything with [well recorded] live instruments. Rock, country, alternative, all that good stuff!

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: I have a keen ear for pitch and time. I can usually detect the slightest timing and pitch issues and will not stop tweaking it until it is perfect.
