Interview with Knowlej Ra

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: That it is simple and/or easy. This field comes with its learning curves, frustrations, stressors, etc. It’s the love that pushes us to keep going and continue doing what we love.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Know what you want and need. It doesn’t help the process when we ask questions about the project, but the client doesn’t have the answers. Also, price negotiations are fine, but returning responses that are 1/5 of what we charge is a little appalling. Music professionals set rates according to their experience and skill level; the amount of years and learning that it took for us to be able to get you these quick turnarounds.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I’ve been doing music professionally for the past 7-8 years. Most of that time has been spent engineering, producing, and songwriting.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: Constant production to continue building my beat store catalog on Airbit.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: That answer has since been realized. At this point, I’m happy to work with good people. I don’t care if you’re just starting out, building a fan base, or have Grammy nominations... being a good person is the goal we should all strive towards.

  11. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  12. A: My debut project, Surface From Nowhere, means a great deal to me because it is my first project.

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: Both. There are some qualities that both applications provide that are distinct in their own ways. For example, it's difficult to emulate the true sound of an API Vision Channel Compressor (even though that console is hybrid) with a plug-in...sure it's rather close, but just isn't the same. Then, on the flip-side of that coin, digital applications tend to process binary information and send that information much quicker than analog in my opinion. There's of course a deeper expansion to weighing the two, but there just isn't space in this box. lol

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: I will always give you the best product and service that I can and will communicate with you throughout completion of your work.

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: I like the freedom to create, study, practice, and learn my craft better everyday...I love growing. Growth is what separates success from failure in this industry.

  19. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  20. A: New clients often ask me, "What DAW's do you run?" I am always proud to list Reason first, then Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, etc.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Waking up in a new Bugatti, selling it for market value, and stacking up the money to invest in a private island. Unique, smart, and using my surroundings to continue growing.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: One band eq's and low-pass filters are your friends! So many times I get rough mixes that are so low-end heavy that it is off-putting; rolling off at the very least, 80Hz, can clean up "mud" so much.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: I usually work on Hip-Hop, R&B, Rock...I like working on various genres.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: My inspirations are very broad because I am always open to thinking of new ideas and ways to create. J-Dilla is my favorite producer, Andre 3000 is my favorite artist, Dennis Chambers is my favorite drummer, Jazz is my favorite genre, etc. So, as you can see...my inspirations are many.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I provide attention to my clients in their production, songwriting, editing, mixing, and featuring needs. I believe far too many clients get less attention than they deserve, so I make it a point to pay attention, so that I can effectively help you take your music to the next stage.
