Interview with Jen-yi L.

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: I work from my home studio with a condenser mic, the Rode NT1A. I have a Roland Juno-DS 88 key keyboard for inputting midi and work off of ProTools 2021. I also work with Maschine studio for beat production.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: I do a lot of toplining and some production for other artists. I also do session vocals for clients who already have written music but need a singer, as well as full on production from scratch. I love various aspects of music and am happy to tailor a project to each individual's needs.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Pitching for several international artists, writing more personal work

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital, because I grew up in this age and it's faster. Though I am fascinated with analog and the beauty of it and make a point to learn both.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: People tend to say my voice has an angelic quality to it, and it is definitely on the mellow side. My voice is described as feminine and perhaps haunting at times. In terms of writing, I also tend to write from a feminine perspective, though I have written for both male and female parts and don't hold back in my storytelling. I take a personal approach in my lyrics and relate to everything I write.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: Singers/Songwriters: Jhené Aiko, Tinashe, Kehlani, Julia Michaels, Jason Derulo Producers: Zaytoven, Sir Nolan, Rock Mafia

  13. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  14. A: My most recent project that comes to mind is a gig I just completed yesterday, singing for two Taiwanese artists' California tour. I sang background and had an amazing time connecting with the artists and their music that spans over 2 decades of hit songs. The audience sang along to most songs even years later, in a foreign country. That was something to aspire to in my own career.

  15. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  16. A: I was directed to this website from a talented vocalist and songwriter, Jessica Louise Garcia. She has such a special, raw quality to her voice. Not to mention, she is a pretty rad human being. If you get the chance to work with her, do it.

  17. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  18. A: I will give every project my all and do everything in my power to ensure satisfaction.

  19. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  20. A: It is mentally, emotionally, physically stimulating and I love the challenge of discovering something new and growing every day!

  21. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  22. A: Are you married? Just kidding. No. Most common question is probably how much will this cost? How long is the turnover? Both questions that are answered elsewhere on this page.

  23. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  24. A: That we aren't doing real tough mental work. Music is math, and lyrics and songwriting is language. Music is also healing.

  25. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  26. A: What is this for? How will this be distributed?

  27. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  28. A: Actually listen to somebody's body of work and decide if that's what you want for your particular project. Credits themselves are impressive but the style has to match your vibe

  29. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  30. A: Mic, laptop, video camera, headphones and a keyboard

  31. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  32. A: My career path is a singer-songwriter, working simultaneously developing my own music as well as working with and for others. I've been singing for years, since choir in middle school and haven't stopped. I've been songwriting for just as long but only recently getting more serious about it, since going to school for it.

  33. Q: How would you describe your style?

  34. A: Soft with a real edge. Storytelling and emotional

  35. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  36. A: Jason Derulo because he has been an inspiration to me from a young age, as a dancer, singer and songwriter.

  37. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  38. A: Trust your ear and trust your feelings. They will tell you what you want to hear, and if you want to hear it chances are someone else will too.

  39. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  40. A: R&B and 90's pop vibes

  41. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  42. A: My strongest skill is songwriting--putting melody and lyrics together with chords that bring out a message and emotion.

  43. Q: What's your typical work process?

  44. A: I sit down, pull up the project details if it's a commissioned project, make sure I understand the project and ask necessary questions, then get to work. If it's toplining, I typically loop the track until I get something to start with, then work on lyrics and finding a strong melody. If it's vocals only, I listen to the guide, or read the notation, get the melody in my head and then hit record.
