Bob Stark on SoundBetter

I am an independent producer residing in Portland, OR.

There have been wonderful clients over the years… from the glory days of punk with Poison Idea to the incredibly lush orchestrations of The Chuck Israels Jazz Orchestra. A few artists and bands that I have enjoyed working with over the years include… Esperanza Spalding, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, McKinley, Michael Shrieve, Tracy Grammer, David Torn, Missy Higgins, Michael Brecker, Everclear, Bill Frisell, Douglas September, Peter Asher, Craig Carothers, Doug Smith, Heatmiser, Intervision, The Bylines, Quarterflash, Upper Left Trio, John Nilsen, Vayo Raimondo, ValGardena, Tom Grant, Darrell Grant, Mordy Ferber, Tunnel 6… and several up and coming artists ( I hope )… Taylor John Williams, Nicole Glover, Kit Taylor, Jarrod Lawson, Tahirah Asha Memory. My apologies to all that are not on this brief list. You all are cherished as clients and friends in a business that generally consists of one month intense friendships every three years.

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Almost every album I have done has been with Bob. Eight so far including two college choir albums. My first band Intervision had a nickname for him, "The Oracle", because everything he touches just turns into ear candy. This dude is the best, and not just in Oregon, I'm talking in competition with the best in the world. He is worth every penny and far more. He'll take your project into a stratosphere that you could only dream of. Work ethic, professionalism, easy going demeanor, and phenomenal ears, he's got it all. I can't say enough good things about him.

Interview with Bob Stark

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: A new Val Gardena album, orchestrations for Christopher James and, beginning soon, a new Swimfish album.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: Tough Question... 1) Barefoot MM45 Monitor System 2) Cathedral Pipes Notre Dame 3) McAllister MP2 Mic Pre 4) MacPro loaded with Protools 5) Grace 904 Monitor System the developers can bring a generator and the rest of the gear...

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: 1) Laila Biali - Beautiful voice, fantastic songwriting. 2) Taylor Swift - There's a lot of unexplored possibilities for her. 3) Sting - well... because Sting!

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: Inspiring Musicians - David Torn, Janelle Monáe, Prince, Marcin Wasilewski, Brian Eno, Chris Potter, Taylor Swift Inspiring Production - Max Martin, Kevin Killen, George Massenburg

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  10. A: Esperanza Spalding - City of Roses... it won a grammy and I was tracking engineer.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Digital - Sonically it passed analog (tape) years ago. Besides that, we're all using an analog path to record to the computer and to listen from the computer. I can create all the distortions and noises that tape used to do at my whim versus at the whim of the tape machine...

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: 1) What is your dream venue that you want to play? 2) Why are you doing your project and do you have a business plan to recoup? 3) Are your songs undeniably great?

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I work in a modest room that is tailored to accurate listening. Whilst I have a nice selection of pres, processing, microphones etc., the end result is based on the aesthetic that works for the client.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: The most common work I do is to mold songs to their best possible potential.
