Mor Mezrich worked at The Record Plant in LA and Avatar Studios in NYC. He has also worked as a freelance engineer at Westlake Studios (LA), Studio X (Seattle), Red Star Recording (LA), Avatar Studios (NYC), and Flux Studios (NYC) among others.

Mezrich attended Berklee College of Music (Summa Cum Laude), where he was formally trained in music production and engineering. He further mentored with heavy hitters like Al Schmitt at Capitol Studios (LA), Tommy Vicari at Capitol Studios (LA) and Firehouse Studios (Pasadena), George Massenburg and Tal Herzberg (RIP).

Armed with experience as both a trained musician and engineer, Mezrich has an in-depth understanding of both the science and the art of recording. “Over the past 20 years, the recording process has changed with advances in technology,” he said. “Yet, the same principles of great production remain. The “Old School” experience I bring to a project is somewhat of a unique experience for many musicians.”

Interview with Mor Mezrich

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: Probably the difference between mixing and mastering.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: An EP called "Dreamland" - it was a jazz crooner style, which isn't something typical I work on. I recorded, mixed and mastered on that. Everything came together so well, and the artist was really happy, which is all I ask for. The response to those recordings was really fantastic, and the artist got signed, so quite happy with the whole thing.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Recording an album and mixing some singles...

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: I'm still figuring out this platform and getting to know people here.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Both - really depends what's right for the situation and the song.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I care about your project and make sure it's always at the highest quality.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: When people get excited about the music we're working on - when they see their creation come to life. That's exciting!

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Not sure that there is a dongle common question. Every relationship is unique. I like to take the time to get to know who I'm working with and what they're looking for.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What music are you inspired by lately? Was there anything that inspired you as you were making this song/album?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: - Organize your session files so it's clear what you're sending. - If you have a clear idea for the project, think about how to articulate it. Making a playlist and describing what about each song you like can be really helpful. - Finally, after describing what you want, let go and allow the process to unfold. Sometimes the song can take shape in a new, exciting way!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop, monitors, my UAD Apollo interface, Neumann mic and probably a nice analog compressor (can't choose which!). All sand and no walls - desert islands should have pretty good acoustics. :)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been doing this for some time. I've interned and worked in bigger studios, had wonderful mentors, and have some memorable moments that I'll always cherish. I bring these experiences to every song.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Polished and big, yet organic.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: The Foo Fighters, I've always loved their energy.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Let things breathe - be mindful not to throw the kitchen sink at every spot in the song. Sometimes less is more!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Rock, pop, latin and jazz.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I think the combination of listening and technical skills have to come together. Listening to the music, but also listening to the client!

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Professionalism, caring and a focus on what will bring out the song in the way that it will make an impact and connect with people.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to have a conversation with the artist and see what vibe they're going for, then, get to work mixing the tracks. I usually do a first mix which is probably about 80% of the way there, and then get some input. I really want to know that we're taking the song where the artist/client wants it to go. Then I finish the fine details, and take any notes into account.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is hybrid, meaning I use both digital plugins and analog processing. It's about what works best for the song.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Great is great. So inspired by great songs, and great performances.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mix songs, and when the bands are local in NYC, I also record the bands/musicians in the studio.
