Interview with Jeff Wolpert
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An espresso maker, a great chair, PMC monitors, Neumann mics and the best musicians in the world.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: More than 30 years now! I've always owned my own studio except for the few years I spent as the chief engineer of a large studio complex. Even then I was technically freelance.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: You really don't know if something works until you hear it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly acoustic oriented.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: After 30 years of mixing I've got a deep bag of tricks to make things happen.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to get what the song is about and mix in a way that re-enforces that idea.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen until I get a good idea of what the song is all about then I start to mix. I love it when the artist provides me with a good rough mix to help me see where they were going.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I've got an analog/digital hybrid setup. A fully automated and recall-able SSL AWS 924 with full patch bay and tons of outboard gear along with a powerful Pro Tools HD system with literally hundreds of plug ins. I like to change monitors while I'm mixing for different perspectives and use models form PMC, JBL, Genelec, Yamaha and even a little Roland mono speaker.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of the time I'm mixing. I produce a lot of the time mostly in collaboration with the artist.
