Interview with Julian Teodocio

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: I produce, record and mix. I have been doing this for a couple years and I enjoy working on music and I am looking foward to doing this full time someday.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: In my opinion, the biggest misconception of what mixing engineers do in general is that a lot of people think we can make anything sound good, which is not always the case. You can't polish a turd.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: When producing I talk to artist of their vision of the song, I write down ideas and go from their. When Recording if its a whole band I like to start with the drums to get the groove of the song and move on to bass and so on. When I mix the first thing I do is listen to the song to get a feel for it and then i set the levels of the track to prevent clipping and move on EQ and so on.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: My setup revolves around my Mac Pro with Pro Tools 12 and Reason 8 working mostly in the box. I use a lot of Waves plugins, Slate Digital and a lot others. For recording Hardware I use multiple pre amps and audio interfaces such as Focusrite ISA One, Art TPS II, 2 Presonus Firepods and a Warm Audio TB12 Tone Beast.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: I am inspired by musicians such as John Mayer, Bruno Mars, Jason Mraz and Mario Domm, musicians that have a lot of passion for their craft and are very good at it. I also admire mixing engineers like Chris Lord-Alge, Tony Maserati, Dave pensado and Manny Marroquin who have consistently created great sounding mixes for some of our favorites artists.
