Blake Pfeil | Songwriter on SoundBetter

Hello, hello, hello. I'm Blake. I write songs for people to sing. I write them for me to sing too, but I really like when other people sing them. I also write music for movies. I'd love to write a song for you.

Dubbed by Playbill.com as "a boy with too much talent," Blake Pfeil is an award-winning, multidisciplinary performance artist whose original songwriting and theatrical work has been featured globally, including notable stints at Joe's Pub, Feintstein's/54 Below, Rockwood Music Hall, the Highline Ballroom, NY Live Arts, Kasteel Well (Well, Netherlands), Icaro Teatro (Queretaro, Mexico), Gyeonggi English Village (Paju, South Korea), Concordia College, Emerson College, Purchase College, the National YoungArts Foundation, Shakespeare Theatre of NJ, Huntington Theatre Company, New Repertory Theatre, BSP Kingston, Denizen Theatre, among others.

Blake's debut album Wallpaper is available anywhere you can stream/buy music online, and his Joni Mitchell-inspired theatrical creation THE BBC, 1970 is in its fourth developmental workshop.

Blake is also one of the cofounders of NYC-based folk-fusion collective Macabre Americana, was the host of “Standing Room Only” on WERS (88.9 FM, Boston), and currently serves as Operations Manager at TMI Project, in addition to hosting "The Pfeil File" live Friday nights on 107.9 FM/1490 AM (Hudson Valley, NY) or at RadioKingston.org.

Blake was awesome! I came to him wanting to write original material for the first time, and his guidance and expertise made the process easy to navigate. I now actually feel like it's possible to not only have original material, but music that will stay in people's minds - All thanks to Blake! He immediately put me at ease and pulled out of me the inspiration we needed to write a song with an authentic message. There's no judgement with him, and I never felt like I needed to filter my impulses while we wrote.

Interview with Blake Pfeil | Songwriter

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm currently developing a folk/rock musical.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Oooooo..... favorite question of this whole thing. Depends on what style you're going for and what you want. Generally analog, but for electronic music I'd definitely say digital... or if you're trying to save money, digital.

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: I played keys on a track for the YoungArts Foundation -- it was a blast to collaborate on as a band member. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXugq-0Y-FA

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Rachel Gavaletz

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will write a song that you want to sing every day.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I can't believe that I get to share my soul with people and help them understand theirs with music. It's a privilege.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Just be honest, concise, and straight-forward. I love musicians who know exactly what they want.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: notebook, pen, snacks, pillow, tape recorder

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: It's always to be half a songwriter, the other half an actor. I've been working professionally for over ten years now.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: Pop-infused folk with a theatrical influence.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: Sara Bareilles. I want to write with her. I think she and I could bounce major ideas and progressions off one another.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: I always meditate before I write.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Pop, folk, rock, musical theatre

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Melodies, specifically memorable licks.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: It's a direct mixture of head and heart. I write with a pop sensibility and a lyric wit.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: It changes song to song. I ask that I'm given information on the song that needs to be written, and I go from there.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: It's a small studio setup in Brooklyn where I do demo recording. Straight-forward tracks to sell to musicians for their various needs.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Jamie Cullum, Gavin DeGraw, Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles, Sia, Grace Potter

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I write songs for singers and bands to record. Pop, folk, and rock mostly.
