Interview with PhilipBreidenbach

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I want to make my clients happy, while always providing my honest personal opinion.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: There are a lot of ways to improve things in the mix - In the end it is the tone that makes the music. The sound of a finished Mix is determined by the way it has been played, recorded and produced to a great extend.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: Depends on the job. In general I try to find out about the clients taste and musical background to be able to provide the best possible result for their needs.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Listen to their work, get in contact and see if it feels right.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: My Guitar, my Metric Halo ULN8, my Mac Book, my Moog and my AKG414.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Mixing, Producing with Artists, Recording Instruments, Recording Bands

  15. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  16. A: I am new to the place, so not yet...

  17. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  18. A: I came out of the box some years ago, because I was curious about analogue summing and it allowed me to include outboard compressors. Recently I upgraded my studio with some really nice converters and went back in the box - still keeping the infrastructure to insert outboard gear. This Hybrid is working fine for me and I am very happy with the results.

  19. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  20. A: The fact that I can learn every day is what I like most about my job. While working with so many different kind of customers from different genres I found that each musical style has it's own codes and sound esthetics. Internalizing those really pushes my technical understanding as well as my general understanding of music to a new level every time I am working on a new project.

  21. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  22. A: "How much?" :)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started playing the guitar at the age of 5. In High School at the age of 14 I started making my first productions. After school I studied Jazz guitar at the conservatory in Maastricht (NL). By that time I also started to work in a studio and learned the basics of studio work. In 2011 I recorded and produced my first Studio Album. I left the studio 2 years later and started to buy gear and to build my own studio. Since then I am recording, producing and mixing for different artist and customers.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Musical. Also a certain degree of artistic claim is a personal demand to myself.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: There are so many talented and gifted people out there that I would like to work with that it would exceed the size of this box to write them all down...

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Go with the flow!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I am not bound to musical genres. In the past I was recording, mixing and producing jazz, pop, rock, reggae and classical music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I am as well producer/mixing engineer as professional musician and multi instrumentalist. This gives me the opportunity to realize a whole production from recording the Instruments to mixdown by myself. By implication this allows me to offer my clients better conditions.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I always try to preserve the genuine feel and intention of a song and make that sound very good.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: That really depends on the job. When mixing I typically receive recordings online and send back the finished mixes. The same goes for recording instruments. Sometimes I produce and arrange whole instrumentals around rough song ideas from clients, that were recorded with just a guitar/piano and voice. In this case I start the production with the material they sent me and ask them to re-record their voice later. Whenever I am working "online" I am in close contact with the clients to guarantee

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I am inspired and influenced by a lot of different artists. What I love most about music is diversity.
