Chris Katzourakis on SoundBetter

Chris Katzourakis is a London based Sound Engineer. He has been working in big studios in London and abroad for the last 5 years and in this time gained a lot of experience with "A List" music artists and producers.

Music has been Chris's passion all his life.
From the age of 14 he started getting involved with mixing going on to get great results studying music technology at college, and then finishing top of his class studying sound engineering at one of the most prestigious universities focused on sound & media in Greece. He has since worked and gained experience at some of the biggest studios in London and Greece, including "The Church Studios", "Livingston Studios" and "Sierra Studios".
He has also worked as an engineer at many live concerts including the biggest festival in Greece, "Rockwave Festival" which included performances from "The Black Keys" and "The Prodigy" and the Greek version of popular TV series "The Voice".

Interview with Chris Katzourakis

Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup includes a top of the line new Mac pro setup with Pro Tools 12, Logic Pro X, Genelec 1031a Monitors, a wide range of VST's, with a Universal Audio Apollo Twin audio interface and a wide range of microphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing this for the last 7 years, I focused on sound engineering as a career as I always knew I wanted to do something in the music industry and was not too set on being just a musician. When it came to recording I was more interested in how to create the best recording and mix of the music rather than the playing part. I therefore went to college studying music technology, followed up by a degree in one of the best Greek universities for sound engineering and am now applying myself to complete a masters at Surrey University in Acoustics and Sound engineering.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, my teacher and mentor Alexandros Chrysidis.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I would choose analog any day as I believe you go through a whole different process when dealing with actual machines and calibrating them properly to get the sound you desire, also however accurate plugins can be they will never be able to replicate the exact analog sound.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: There are lots of things I enjoy about my job, from the professional atmosphere when dealing with clients, with a hint of unprofessional artistic humour to the freedom and input you have in creating a piece of music to be distributed to a wider audience. Everything about it is amazing and you never stop learning or gaining great experiences.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would very much like to work with Justin Vernon from Bon Iver. He brings a unique sound and style to his songs which I believe, given the chance to observe his process, would be very inspiring.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My main inspiration in music is Hans Zimmer having been devoted to sound engineering partly from inspiration taken from film soundtracks, Hans Zimmer has been the pinnacle music producer I aspire to resemble. Other inspirations include Chris Lord Alge and David Bottrill.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mainly mixing and mastering jobs, with the odd tuning and recording session.
