Interview with Fabrizio "simoncia" SIMONCIONI

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The project I am worked on and am especially proud of, is for sure the album "Peligro" by Reik (Sony Music Mx, 2011). I recorded and Mixed 10 songs of that album, included the two Hit singles "Peligro" and "Creo En Ti" (this last one was the most played single in Latino America in 2012). I've been nominated at the XII Latin Grammy for Best Album of the Year) and earned 4 Platinum records.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am mixing differents international projects from Spain and Mexico for Sony, Warner and Universal Music Int.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: ANALOG. Dot. Because how it sounds, how an analog device respond and shape the sound, personality, unicity. Analog means to me emotion and dynamic.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: a complete satisfaction. I always say to my client: I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPY!

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love the every day challenge while I mix.. I never ever got bored doing twice the same thing

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: Neve 1073, Urei LN1176, Teletronix LA2A, Bricasti M7 and, if I have enough space on the island, a Solid State Logic 9000K

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I started in the early 80's as solo Artist in the Italo Disco genre.. then I switched "on the other side of the window" and start studying to become an engineers in 1988. I am doing this job professionally for 30+ years

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: There are so many International Artists I would love to work with.. but if I have to name 2 or 3 of them, I would say Coldplay, John Mayer and Bruno Mars

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Sure. My "renowned" vocal chain, to achieve a perfect on-your-face, deep and clear vocals. I split my vocal track, leaving one track untouched while I literally crush the other with an LN1176 Black Face (all buttons in, slowest attack, fastest release). I make a blend of the 2 tracks until I find the tone I like. Then, I send the original untouched track thru an aux send to a Dolby A (encoding mode). I put the return of the Dolby A on a third channel on the console, filtering out all the low and mid low frequencies and enhancing the crispness and very hi frequencies. I add this to the previous 2 tracks. Just a little bit, to give brightness and presence. When I will add a reverb and/or a delay on the vocal, the dolby channel is not going to the effects: this will make the reverb less sibilant and muddy and more smooth and deep, while the high frequencies are stil dry and clear. I usually add a little bit of body with an AMS DMX15-80s dual delay (5ms pitched to 1.005 and 7ms pitched to 0.995 to create a sort of doubler). Enjoy!

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I work mainly on Latin Pop & international Rock & pop rock music

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: My studio setup is builded around my SSL 9000J superAnalog Console, many analog outboards (mainly compressors and limiters as LN1176s, LA-2A, TG1 EMI ltd, Chandler Germaniums, EL7s & reverb/delay units as Bricasti M7, 480L, 300L, PCM42, SDE3000s, AMS DMX15-80s etc.). My DAW is a Pro Tools HD10.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I admire and got inspired by Tom & Chris Lord-Alge and Manny Marroquin as mixing engineers and

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Mainly I work remotely as Mixing engineer in my own facility in Tuscany, Italy. My Clients sends me their session in PT10 format and a rough mix. Then I make a mix and send it to them for the revision.
