Remote Mixing and Editing

Garrick Wareham on SoundBetter

My name is Garrick Wareham, I'm a graduate from the University of Kent with a BSc in Music Technology. I'm a talented mixing engineer, editor, producer, and post production engineer with a keen ear for quality and always look to maximise the potential of the projects I'm working on.

I offer mixing and editing services for music and media, including post production mixing and editing, and vocal comping. As an engineer I have a strong technical background from studying at university, as well as other projects and my own learning that I have undertaken outside of education. As a musician and DJ I have a huge wealth of musical knowledge which I will bring to every project.

I work 'In The Box' from my home studio, which is set up for stereo mixing with Adam A7X monitors, and can we arranged in a 5.1 set up with alternative speakers. Working with music I have a wealth of analogue modelling plugins from Slate Digital and Waves, as well as a variety of other 3rd party plugins that bring productions to life!

With post production mixing and editing I work with these same plugins, but also possess audio restoration plugins from iZotope for cleaning up background sounds and spoken word audio.

Interview with Garrick Wareham

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Recently I have completed Folk, Rock/Prog, and Indie Rock/Folk projects, and am currently producing, recording, editing and mixing two more Rock/Prog projects.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Hybrid - There are huge benefits to working in both realms, and why be limited to only one!

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Having a part in, and bringing projects to their maximum potential. Working with people who have the same drive as me to bring the projects to this point.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: That anyone is able to mix and edit, when it's a skill that is worked towards and honed with hours of practice.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: What artists are the inspiration behind your sound? What role do you expect of a person doing the job you are hiring for to undertake?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Find someone that is willing and ready to work with you to your vision, and maximise it, not someone that will process your music through a 'standard template'. Find someone that will treat each song uniquely.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Computer, Monitors, Plugins, Electricity Supply, Desk

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I'm at the start of my professional career path, however I have strong skills and have been a musician and a music lover for the vast majority of my life.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: My ability to work with and towards the artists vision whilst providing insight and finesse to the product to bring it to it's maximum potential.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I approach each song as a separate entity from every project beforehand. This gives me the flexibility to work towards clients and artists visions more effectively.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: 'Fast and aggressive' to 'Slow and detailed' - I work towards the big picture of the track quickly so as not to lose sight of the song, and then move into the detail and take care with the finer details of each project.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: iMac based 'In The Box' set up with the option of stereo and 5.1 surround sound set ups.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Musicians with passion for their work, but also with an appreciation for production values and the drive to maximise the quality of their work. Graham Cochrane and Dave Pensado, not only for the quality of their work, but their passion for spreading their knowledge to others as well.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Mixing and editing for songs. Basic mastering (for competitive loudness), and production advice.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Work 'fast and aggressively'. If you can do anything to push yourself forward as a mixing engineer then read 'Zen And The Art of Mixing V2'.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: With a really wide ranging love of music, I will bring my talents to any kind of music that I get the opportunity to work on. I tend to work on Folk and various styles of Rock projects more than anything else.

  33. Q: How would you describe your style?

  34. A: Flexible and appropriate. If the project requires punch and power, then that's what will be delivered. If it needs a delicate touch, then gentle and thoughtful approach to the sound will be the key to a good product.

  35. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  36. A: Thrice - as a rock band they push boundaries o the genre with their music, format, and production and mixing choices. The album Vheissu is a fantastic example of this.
