Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: it really depends on the situation I have lots of the best sounding analog gear at my fingertips but sometimes software wins and plus it has "UNDO"... I use both regularly
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am proud of everything I do
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: that a person can do 10 songs in an hour or do it at home and sound like the pros
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Ill usually ask something like ...if you heard your song on the radio what other artists might be heard on that same station? I find that this gives me a better idea of what market they hope to hit without me asking something like who do you sound like?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: call and ask lots of questions don't text it is way to detailed for that
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: loud, clean and punchy
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: keep things simple and well rehearsed oh wait that's 2
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: once again its all over the map most of what i do is rock and rap
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Vocal production, Mixing and Mastering
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It is all over the map, usually first Ill get with the client and plan a detailed strategy then depending on what type of project it is we will start knocking out the basic parts and then fill out the production as needed the bottom line... do what it takes to make a good record!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: For a vocal chain I have a dedicated ISO booth with a selection of large diaphragm mics including Neumann, Shure and Lawson with API mic Preamps and a selection of limiters. For tracking and recording I have a large format analog console by AMEK and I also have a 2 inch 24 track recorder by Studer and of course a Pro Tools HD setup with all the smoking hot software. For analog mastering, I have a Manley Vari-Mu tube compressor and a Manley Passive EQ . as far as outboard gear goes I have a Universal Audio LA2A and a rack of other compressors EQs and other goodies.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: While working in L.A. studios some of my friends who were way ahead of me in the recording game were usually working on some big name acts like REO Speedwagon, Sammy Hagar, Michael Jackson and Foreigner to name a few so I was always hanging around the various studios where these records where going down and picking up on every bit of info and techniques that I could.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily specialize in rock, country and rap. The thing I have done the most of is mixing followed by vocal production and guitar production and drums, lots of drums.I produced my first record in 1975 shortly after that I got hired as a recording engineerin a studio in Los Angeles... over the last 35 years in the music business there is not too much that has not crossed my path.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: dialog editing this Thursday, Vocal overdubs tomorrow morning, acoustic guitar and vocal duet in the afternoon Wednesday, drums on Friday mixing a song for my next project when I have time

A: meeting interesting people and helping them rise up in the game

A: How much do you charge? answer not enough (lol)
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Sm 57 mic, La2a compressor, Macbook Pro computer, my guitar, a generator full of gas
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: always been a guitarist but started doing recording as a job in 1977
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Robert Plant because he can keep reinventing himself and is always very creative
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I really consider my self to be a catalyst for the artist.. I will offer my opinion but you have to ask for it.
