Interview with Robbie Soukiasyan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I recently did what I like to call a "Miracle Mix". An artist had a single recorded, unfortunately it was done VERY VERY poorly. With some times and studio tricks, I managed to get it to sound like a record without making it sound very processed and still retaining the organic nature of the sonics.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently working on tracking and mixing four full length albums. Very blessed to stay this busy.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. I can write a book on why, but they both have their strengths.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I've always said if you're going to do anything do the best you can. I'm don't cut corners or compromise quality. After all my name ends up on these projects as well. So what I can say is you're absolutely going to love the work.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: EVERYTHING

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: To be honest, my customers don't have too many questions for me because everything is explained very clearly before we start on anything and everybody is always on the same page.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I don't do mastering. I like to have someone that has never listening to these mixes listen to it through different speakers.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Close your eyes, and describe to me what your goal is for this project. How do you want yourself and others to feel when they listen to the music? Tell me what is it about each song that made you feel something when you were writing it?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: When looking for anyone to be a part of your project, make sure that person has similar taste.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: SM57, Auratones, U67, Apogee converters and a Neve 1073.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started interning at an indie label at the age of 16, which led to doing A&R a couple of years later. Fast forward a bunch and here I am doing what I love for a living.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Organic.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: So many talented artists around these days, it's hard to pick.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Less is more.
