Interview with Mixing and Mastering Engineer
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I did a live recording of my band, mixed and mastered it, then compared it to 7 mastering houses. My results were as god as two of them and better than the others.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Just finished mastering a 16 song CD.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: not yet
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, it's more cost effective and quite good today.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will always try my best to give you a great product.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Listening to a wide variety of music.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I can't fix every mistake for them.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the most important element of your song, vocal, guitar, bass etc. What is the mood your trying to convey.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Shop around, most mastering houses will give you a test master.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: workstation, monitors, DAW, condenser mic, guitar (if the island had power) if not then just the guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started as a guitar player and that made me want to make it sound as good as possible which led to recording, mixing and mastering. 11 years
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Record as clean as possible and don't record to hot.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: All genres except rap and death metal.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Critical listening to the artist and the material.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Listen, clean up artifacts, listen, EQ, listen, compress.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm a minimalist, so just what I need to get the job done.

Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I have a very small studio so mostly I record singer / songwriters, and mix and master pre-recorded sessions.
