Interview with Billy Straus Music

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: I do a lot of production from the ground up, working with artists on song structure, pulling in A list musicians where needed to make a track really shine, honing arrangements and capturing a great performance. I also do a lot of mixing of files that are sent to me where people want my objectivity and ears on the mix.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: My Neumann U48, Neve 33609 compressor, 1957 Gretsch 6120

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I have a great combo of real vintage front end with a Pro Tools HD setup. Awesome old mics are the key: U48, U67, Telefunken 250. Then vintage mic pres from Neve (including a pair of pristine 1084's from Bruce Swedien that he used on MJ records!) and Neve & DBX compressors feeding an Antelope clocked HD setup. It's the best of both. Big tracking room in my barn with a Tama drum kit, mic'd up and ready to go.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: Dan Lanois is a producer whose style and approach are very inspiring to me. Lots of air, and an organic approach to making music.
