Music Production

Matt Marlow Music on SoundBetter

My name is Matt Dye and I am a music producer.

Music is what I do. I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, and for as long as I can remember, music has been a long-standing passion of mine. I first got into producing and making music when I was 16 years old, and in doing so, I created a vastly growing interest that hasn't stopped since. Producing was the perfect outlet for me due to the fact that it blended my knowledge and love of technology with the feel and complexity that sound brings. Genre doesn't matter to me because, in reality, all I’m focused on is getting you the best sound possible. Most of my recording work has been done locally, with local artists.

Interview with Matt Marlow Music

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm currently working on an EP with local Jacksonville artist, Robert Nettles. I will soon be working on a full length album that will be all me.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Nope

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital. Because we live in a digital age. Analog is outdated in a sense, so eventually, everything will become digital by measure of technical efficiency.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: A fast and easy experience along with the ability to keep in close contact with me whenever needed.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: It allows for personal creativity and expression. Also just the ability to create something (specifically music) is awesome within itself.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How long does it take? 24 hours or less, depending on what it is.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I don't actually play any instruments at all. I can somewhat fiddle with the piano, but that's just due to my production experience.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What kind of work needs to be done? What genre of music would you classify your work as? What is the scale of the project? How much production has already been completed? Are there any specifics you are looking for and what implemented?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Communicate with the provider. Proper and prompt communication can mean everything for a project. If your provider doesn't give you an easy and quick way to exchange idea's, make sure to value them on how much they seem to care about a personal interaction between themselves and a customer.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: An ax, a cooking pot, a knife, flint and steel, and a canteen.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I do not have, and never went down, a "traditional" career path. Music is a passion of mine, and it will always be something I love. But I have been producing music for almost 5 years, starting back to when I was 15 and I had recently built my first computer. After that, it just snowballed into something that I grew to love.

  23. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  24. A: I'm very proud of my EP, Coastal, which was the first complete project that I did alone. Usually with some of my past work, I would play more of a production role; making the instrumentals and engineering. When I made this EP, I essentially developed a style that I wanted to build on and that I wanted to apply in a lot of aspects of my musical passion. It really helps you to develop as an artist and producer.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Simplicity is my style. I try to not make things harder than they need to be. Work with what you have, and don't go too over the top (never a good thing to do).

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: DJ Cam, because we have a very similar musical style.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Learn from your experiences as a producer. Find faster, more efficient ways of doing things, while also maintaining a delicate balance of attention to detail.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Rap/Hip-Hop and Indie/Alternative

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I think my strongest skill, in regards to music production, is my ability to provide a vast array of services from one source (me). I try to stay varied in the things I can do (production wise).

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring whatever is needed to make it sound industry ready. If Mastering is needed, I bring the enhancement that every track needs to become a complete work. When I Mix, I add a little bit of my intuition along with a whole lot of attention to detail. This provides a fresh perspective, and a fresh product, that is ready to finished and brought out for the whole world to listen to.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Depending on the type of work, it usually starts with me receiving files from the client and loading them into my DAW. I proceed to complete whatever the task may be, and once finished, I send the completed project back to client. I will continue to keep communication until the project is 100% ready to go (according to the client's specifications).

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: My favorite artists/bands/groups include (but are not limited to): Aer, Yah Supreme, DJ Cam, Time's of Grace, Dee Surreal, Oktober, Anon, Guy Harrison, and the list could go on. My favorite producers include: Adam Dutkiewicz (Adam D), Zaytoven, Pete Rock, and mattMiGGZ

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: The main services I provide are Mixing and Mastering. I also do total song production (instrumentals) and some graphic design to go along with it.

  43. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  44. A: As of now I work out of my house, but I have a desktop with 7.1 surround sound and studio quality monitors. It's pretty homely, but it is mostly for computer work, so not too much is needed.
