Hi, I'm a Pop/R&B producer, and I specialize in retro-influeced tracks. I have an affinity for the classic sounds of the '60s, '70s & '80s. Analog synths, funky guitars, and heavy grooves characterize my sound.

I produce tracks for artists from the ground up. I discuss the artist's vision to produce a professional track that they can sell and use to build their fanbase. Some artists need instrumental tracks to write songs to. I'm continuously creating instrumental tracks that I sell.

I also do a lot of mixing for other producers and musicians. Many musicians are able to record their projects at home but do not have mixing expertise. That's where I come in.

My production process is easy. Just send me a demo of your song, and I will build a track. The demo can be recorded on anything, even your phone. After I get a general idea for the track, I'll send you a verse/chorus for your approval. If you like it, we can move forward, and I'll finish the track. If not, we'll change it before moving forward.

Interview with Ryan Prewett

Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Greg Kurstin, The Struts, Max Martin, Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo, The Roots, Dave Pensado
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For production, a client will send me a demo of a song, and I will build a track. I will usually send the client a verse and chorus when I get the general idea down to get their approval. If they are happy with it, I will finish the track. For mixing, artists upload their tracks to Dropbox or another online storage site and send me the link.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mostly, I produce tracks from the ground up. Clients send me a demo of a song, and I produce the track. I also make instrumental tracks that clients buy to write lyrics to. This is called top-lining. I also do a lot of mixing for other producers.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I've been producing new Pop records for Levi Ray and Salina Solomon and an R&B record for Chris Hatfield. I've also been mixing records for other producers of several different genres. I even mixed a Jazz record this week!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital! I have some favorite outboard preamps that I use when tracking, but I do all of my mixing in the box. Working digitally allows me to get work done faster for my clients and do quick revisions. I use UAD plug-ins for a large part of my mixing. They sound so much like analog gear.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I studied music and recording in college. I graduated in 2010 and have been producing and mixing since.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: The Roots! The Roots merge so many styles and have been a big influence on my for many years.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't overproduce. Make sure everything that you add to a song has a purpose and isn't there just to be there.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I'm most passionate about Pop and R&B music, and those are the genres I work in most. Being in Nashville, I also work on some Country and Americana music. It's nice to change things up and work in different genres.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My workstation consists of an iMac quad core hooked up to an Apollo 8 thunderbolt interface. Over the last few years I have collected my favorite pieces of outboard gear. I have 6 API preamps, a BAE 1073 and a UA LA-610. My favorite microphones are my Mojave MA-200 and my Royer 101.
