Jim Hustwit - Larp Music on SoundBetter

I'm a criminal. In 2005 I helped get the Crazy Frog to number 1 in the UK charts. I'm now making reparations for crimes against music I am a London based music producer, artist developer and award winning songwriter. Previous clients include Sony, Universal, Ninja Tune.

As a highly experienced producer, I utilise a natural approach to artist development in order to create industry standard, instrument based tracks that would be at home on any major release.

I write, produce, record arrange and mix music for solo artists and singer songwriters.

I work out of a beautiful custom built studio in North London which is included in my rate.

My Promise

I’ve been in your shoes. As a singer songwriter you’ve invested blood sweat and tears in writing your songs. You are then relying on a music producer to help turn those ideas into the highest quality productions; to help turn your ideas and vision into an incredible reality.

You’re investing your hard earned cash and you want to know that your music in safe hands.

You deserve a producer who will invest the same love and attention in your music as they would in their own.

I promise to do just that.

What a talented musician and producer Jim is. He led me through the process of creating a song with consummate ease and professionalism and the finished article is stunning, better than I could have ever hoped for.
He was well prepared, fun and engaging throughout. His creative additions were well-considered and presented and I never felt he was "taking control", rather he was allowing me to create what I wanted and he was adding the spark to make it happen.
    Highly recommended.

Jim walking into my life (I may have walked into his) was a huge blessing. Not only is he an amazing person but his skills as a composer, producer and mixer are outstanding. I worked with previous producers who didn't quite understand what my project was about. Jim understood my vision because he is a visionary as far as music is concerned and the results are nothing short of outstanding. I have finished and launched my first EP which I am really happy with and now working with him on the second so clearly I'm hooked! His love for sound shines and you will get a great vibe from the first hello

Jim is an extremely talented, dedicated and nurturing producer. He is always detailed in his work and strives for perfection. Jim creates an incredibly comfortable environment in which to work in. As an artist it can often be difficult to recreate the intimacy of certain tracks written in isolation and Jim makes feel at home and treats the music with as much care and respect and you would yourself!

Jim's musical abilities, ideas and professional production skills have taken my songs to a level that i never thought possible, and have opened up a whole new world of inspiration for me. It's amazing that we can now record music at home - but taking my tracks into the studio and working with Jim has given me a great insight into production techniques, writing and how to record properly! which has been invaluable.

For the past 10 years I have been very fortunate to work, perform and record on Jim's music. There are very few people that are as passionate and dedicated to the craft of producing and composing like he is. His energy and enthusiasm is infectious and it's always been a pleasure working with a musician of such high calibre. If you are songwriter and need a producer, or you're looking for someone to write/mix music for you, you should definitely get in touch and start collaborating with Jim now.

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: To provide a creative and inspiring environment in which to enjoy the process of making outstanding music.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I love adding a bit of magic and bringing someones song idea to life so that they leave the studio with a finished product which is beyond their expectations.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: Groove driven pop

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Bruno Mars. He's a great song writer, is an incredible performer and has a fantastic voice. I feel I'd learn a lot from working with him.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: My ear. I'm very good at critically analysing a piece of music and breaking it down in to it's component parts. I'm good at harmony because I sing and I have a very good sense of rhythm.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: In producing someone else's music, the most important thing is what the client wants. I will offer my ideas, opinions and and skills, but you are free to take or leave them as you see fit. It's a collaborative process driven by you... I'm a composer and multi-instrumentalist with a wide selection of instruments (acoustic guitars, electric guitars, mandolin, ukulele, upright piano, loads of virtual instruments, But I can help with song structure, lyrics, arrangements (string, brass etc), melody, harmony, mixing etc.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: Write, Arrange and Record a Demo usually in a day Sleep on it. Adjust Accordingly Add bells and whistles (figuratively speaking) Record Properly ideally with all real instruments Sleep on it... for a few days if possible Mix

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I have a custom built fully soundproof studio in north London (Finsbury Park) with a live room and which serves the best tea in London. I have an upright piano, acoustic guitars, a classical guitar, electric guitars, a Laney vintage amp, a mandolin, a uke, a bass guitar. For the tech geeks I have Neuman mics, AEA Ribbons, I use UAD plugins and I monitor and mix through Unity Rock II I do a lot "in the box" but have a a Neve 1073 pre amp, a Neve 8816 summing amp.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I take musical ideas and musing and turn them in to amazing sounding recordings. I work with clients to define their style and hopefully create something unique.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Music driven by melody with big, hooky and emotive choruses. The kind that make you go "mmmmmmm" when they kick in. I love that big epic sound, driven by percussion but then I also love big drum beats. As a guitarist I do a lot of acoustic stuff but I'm also working on a piano album and some funk

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: As a producer I love the work of Paul Epworth As a composer I love the work of Jeff Russo As a Lyricist I love the work of Ed Sheeran As a general writer and performer I love the work of Bruno Mars

  23. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  24. A: Both - Digital allows speed and flexibility whilst analogue provides the warmth and tone the digital lacks. I embrace the future but fondly remember the past

  25. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  26. A: That it can be done in a few hours. Producing and recording a great piece of music takes time. Also that production will not make an average song great. A great song works in it's most simple format... often one instrument and a voice

  27. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  28. A: What do you want to achieve? Who are they doing it for? Who or what do they like? Who or what don't they like? Who they are aside from music.

  29. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  30. A: Talk to any prospective producer or writer. It's as much about your personal relationship with them as it is about who they've worked with and what they've done. They could have produced Michael Jackson but if they are a d*ck then it won't be a fulfilling or fun process. And making music should always be fun!

  31. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  32. A: I've been doing this since 2008. I started as a singer song-writer but realised my passion and strength was in the writing and recording rather than the performing. I quit a lucrative marketing career to work on music full time. I've since spent my time working to constantly improve what I do and learn from those I work with.

  33. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  34. A: It's all about performance! The best recording gear in the world will not make a poor performance sound good. However, basic gear will capture an amazing performance.
