I had a great experience using Sounds Better and working with Stephen. Stephen is a passionate guy and has a genuine interest in his work - and YOUR work. Stephen discussed with me him adding some production value to my album and I cant believe the difference he has made. I'm delighted with the outcome and cant wait to get working with Stephen again soon. Stephen is also a really nice bloke. Down to earth and a pleasure to work with. Very professional. Very high quality of work and Service.

I worked with Stephen back in 2008 on my first record. Even though I was very young and inexperienced, I always felt like Stephen treated my project with the same care and attention that he would for a more established artist. 9 years later the project that Stephen produced and mixed for me is still one that I can be proud of. I can't speak highly enough of Stephen's character and work.

Stephen has produced 2 albums and mixed 3 albums for me. He has an excellent ear for producing songs to their potential and putting together a high quality team to realize the vision of each artist. He's one of the hardest working engineer / producers I've met and truly cares about the artists he invests in.

I've worked with Stephen on several projects over the years and have always been impressed. He's a talented guy that's great across the full spectrum of Producing, Mixing & Mastering. His professionalism is refreshing yet he's still very easy to work with and really seems to care about his artists and the quality of their songs. Highly recommended.

Stephen and I have worked together on 3 different projects now, and whether as producer, mix engineer, or with his mastering hat on, Gause brings passion, skill, and that extra effort that always leaves you feeling like you got more than your money's worth. And it doesn't hurt that he's a killer guy to hang out with for a few weeks.

I have known Stephen for almost ten years now. He has worked on three different projects for me and on every one he has gone the distance to take my projects to the next level. His commitment to excellence is clearly evident in the body of work that he has helped create over his career. If you want your music to sound great, call this man.

Stephen mixed and mastered my 10th record and killed it! He is super easy to work with, he listens well to not only the song and how to service it best, but also, recommendations and thoughts that I brought to the table. He's encouraging, a great dude, and I highly recommend him in any capacity as recording needs come up in your career.

Stephen is one of the most talented guys Nashville has to offer. He has a passion for music and production, but also a passion for the people that he works with on various projects. Whether his role is producer, mixer, or engineer he always puts in the time and effort to make sure the final product is something everyone can be proud of.

Stephen did a great job mixing John Heinrich's "Still Fallen" album that I co-wrote and produced. He was super helpful on working towards achieving our vision for the project. He's also a really good co-writer. We wrote a song, "Change Your Mind," that wound up on my band, Jackopierce's, album, "Everywhere All the Time." Plus - he's a good dude.

I am such a huge fan of working with Stephen. He produced my entire first album 'Pieces' and 4 songs from my second album 'Catch & Release'. He's incredibly professional, hardworking and just an overall great guy. I highly recommend Stephen to any musicians/songwriters trying to take their music to the next level!

I love this guy! He has a passion for music that reaches beyond albums. He cares for the artist. He cares that the product made not only serves the listener well but the future of that artist. His desire is to see each song dig deep & connect personally with the listener. He can see a song for what it will become not just what is at the moment

Interview with Stephen Gause

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Make the gear you have work regardless of platform. I love analog but we live in a digital world. I've worked on both and made great records on both. They are just tools. Presenting the song in the best way possible is what matters.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Either through production or mixing I get to help someone see a dream come to life and often times literally "find" their voice.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: Why are you doing this? What motivates your creative journey? Who is your audience (no wrong answer)? What do you have to say? Who are some of your favorite current and classic artists and why?

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: As a producer and mixer I try to stay as transparent as I can in order to adapt to the style of the artist/song. Also being a song writer I do like to hear the lyrics. I'm a very song driven producer/mixer. But in general I'd say that I have an ear for the very widely interpreted word that is "pop".

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: 19 years professionally in the music business. No plans to stop. I want to work more and more on music that inspires.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: I hope that it is people skills. Bringing the best out in an artist. Music is about the heart more than about the numbers and the math.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: It varies from artist to artist or mix project to next. Production starts with vetting, writing, rewriting, editing and narrowing down songs. That is the hard part. The recording process is less difficult if you pick the right team and have a strong yet flexible vision for the sound. My mix process changes depending on the song. Sometimes I start with drums. Sometimes I start with vocals.

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: I put heart into every thing that I work on.

  17. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  18. A: Why did you pick such a hard business? Me: I keep asking myself that but I can't escape music. I love it.

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: That it is easy. We "play" music but countless hours go into the many aspects of making music. It is hard work and I work 60 hour weeks regularly.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Come to the table with a team attitude. I strive to do the same. The end result of good music and art is the main goal.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: My 1965 Gibson J-45, an SM7 mic, my vintage neves, and some sort of weather resistant recording rig. You can record good music with that. We complicate things. Make the gear you have work for you.

  25. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  26. A: Micah Dalton's "Blue Frontier" was a labor of love made with a friend. We all poured ourselves into the project and I hear that emotion when I listen. I was the producer, engineer, and mix engineer.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: It would be interesting to work with someone like Beck. He is a producer as well and I could learn a lot from him. He has constantly re-invented himself and that is inspiring.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Leave your ego at the door. That applies to everyone. Someone else in the room may have a better idea or contribution that will be missed if you're not listening. Music is a collaborative event.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, rock, country, and sing-songwriter.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I want to judge whether a song makes me feel something. If it does what can we do to add to that raw song instrumentally and with production to grow that feeling. If it doesn't make me feel something can we do some rewriting to get it there or do we move on to the next contender? Ask those questions.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: Full service tracking and mix studio in Nashville, TN. Pro Tools HD based but with great analog chains from mic to pre and a great assortment of vintage instruments.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Daniel Lanois, Ethan Johns, Brendan O'brien, Bob Clearmountain, and Chris Lord-Alge.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Production, engineering, mixing, mastering, artist development, programming, and song writing.
