Interview with Derek the Engineer

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Probably

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: The world is going digital. We will never go back to the Analog sound. Most companies budgets for product development are going towards these types of technologies and you will see less analog hard wear. You will still see the high end stuff coming out but even companies like U.A. and Focusrite are leaning more towards softwear developments than upgrading their outboard gear.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: If you do not like what I do I will refund your money.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Be very specific about what you want and the budget you have to work with. Most engineers are willing to work out deals with you if you are cool and have passion for what you do.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: Hammer, saw, rope, utility knife, flint, flares.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I just have always wanted to learn as much about all aspects of audio engineering as possible..

  13. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  14. A: The last country album I did. A lot of my personality came through in the mixes and the musical performances that I put down on tape.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: I try to provide a stress free environment for the artist to create their art while keeping them focused on the task at hand.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: Doug Macleod. I`m a fan.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Mix with your ears not with your eyes.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Rock.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Listening to the artist.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: Good clean mix that represents the artist vision first.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: Lade back

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: Very cozy and comfortable.

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: Ones that have put the time in and have suffered for their art.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: Tracking, Mixing, Mastering. Live sound Mixing.

  35. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

2014 ended with me finishing up a 6 song ep for " 7 Dirty Words"

Starting off the new year with a live track for a video from " 1 High 5" & finishing up their live album around the end of spring.

Working on a lot of remixes  rite now and doing some masters for some hip hopers. Hopefully I will have Doug Mcleod in later this year!!!
