This was my first time working with Zach and he has to be the best mastering engineer I've ever worked with on this platform. I'm blown away. He is an amazing engineer with such a great ear for music. He mastered my song in an hour and exceeded my expectations completely. I love my song and can't wait to work with him again! I would definitely recommend his services if you are an artist that is serious about your craft.

I have been working with Zach for multiple years and is really the only engineer/producer that I feel comfortable working with. I've worked with him from Boston to LA and I've always had a great experience. His quality is superior to all the other engineers I have worked with and was blown away with my recent mixes. He's worked and knows everyone.

Interview with @ZachNichollsMix

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Getting to reunite with Eric Bellinger on his "Eventually" project was amazing. I had done a lot of work with him over the years upon my move to LA, so it was great to get back in the studio with him this year to finish another one that came out really awesome.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Im usually always working with a variety of labels and artists in Los Angeles on their projects.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both!

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: That communication will be exceptional! There is so much that goes into mixing a great song, I will promise to meet each need with the knowledge and intention to make each piece of work just as exceptional!

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Being exposed to so many different walks of life and places through music.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: When looking to get your material mixed its always best to have the song fully arranged and cleaned up to the best of your ability. Get rid of any used regions or plug in and channels etc. Make it simple to look at and know what is what to a degree. Labeling always helps. Double check all your work.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Laptop, Plugins, LA610, U87, Headphones.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: Ive been in the business for a little over 10 years now. I went to school for engineering and started working in studios right away as a tracking and mixing engineer.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Clean and impactful.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Gain staging is everything!

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: R&B, Pop, and Hip Hop

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Ability to find the sonic niche for each song and combine it with what the client has already envisioned.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: Detail to it's emotional potential. A song is a moment of pure feeling and emotion. I like to find that within each song and expose it. Its what gives the listener something to gravitate towards while listening.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: I live to move in organized steps. Developing a plan for each project or song that will best cater to it. This changes from material to material, but I always like to have some sort of a simplified workflow plan.

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: I like to keep my set up simple but powerful. I don't leave much to waste using all of the essentials I selectively keep around. I use PT 12HD and a few choice outboard gear pieces for summing as well as some choice channel strips, eqs and compressors. I do a lot in the box as well with amazing results.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Most commonly I get asked to Mix and Master material for radio. Next is certainly 1 on 1 vocal tracking with many of my clients.
